Jaguars cut rookie kicker after 1 of his 3 field goal misses hit ex-Cowboys coach

Undrafted free agent kicker Andrew Mevis hasn't had a great start to his NFL career.

Four days into his first training camp, Mevis was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars after missing three field goals during the team's Thursday warm-ups, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco. One of those field goals reportedly missed its mark so badly that it hit former Dallas Cowboys head coach Dave Campo in the shoulder, and the other two weren't even close to the goalposts.

Campo, 75, was an assistant coach and defensive backs coach for the Jaguars from 2005-2007 and is currently a consultant for the USC Trojans and a local radio personality. He coached the Cowboys from 2000-2002.

Mevis went undrafted out of Iowa State and spent his first three seasons kicking at Fordham before playing for the Cyclones. He made 40-61 field goals in college, including 20-23 in 2021, and made two extra points at the 2022 Senior Bowl.

Now, if Urban Mayer had still been head coach, maybe he would have done more than just cut Mevis. The former Jaguars coach reportedly kicked Josh Lambo last offseason before he cut the veteran kicker after Lambo missed several attempts during training camp.

Fortunately for Mevis, all he got was a pink slip and some embarrassment from hitting a bystander. It sounds like Josh Allen's "professional locker room" comments regarding the new Jaguars regime under head coach Doug Pederson are true, after all.

The Jaguars signed veteran kicker Elliott Fry to compete with Ryan Santoso for the starting kicker job.
