Jackson State football player Kaseem Vauls leaves the hospital

Jackson State defensive lineman Kaseem Vauls, 21, who suffered a cardiac arrest in February, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, according to a Twitter post.

Kaseem's father, William Vauls, wrote from his son's account: "Kaseem is going home!! He was discharged today. Thank you to everyone that prayed, helped, showed love, supported, and donated! I couldn't have done it without y'all. Please keep Kaseem in y'all. Love y'all."

Kaseem Vauls had been practicing for two weeks and told his father he had been feeling tired and having stomach pains. His father told him to go to the hospital's emergency room.

While there, Kaseem Vauls suffered a cardiac arrest, with doctors resuscitating him and put him on a ventilator before surgery on Feb.16. William Vauls said that doctors told him his son's heart was functioning at 10-15% capacity and the surgery was life or death.

"What the doctors think happened," William Vauls said, "that when Kaseem's heart was failing, that what was giving him the stomach pains. His liver was suffering as fluid built up with toxins in his liver, kidneys and blood. All those toxins built up in his bloodstream and his heart could not operate properly, and the machine is being used to clean out the blood and toxins."
