J.D. Martinez returned to the Boston Red Sox lineup for Game 2 of the American League Division Series and came through when his team needed him most.

After not playing in Game 1 due to an ankle injury, Martinez batted sixth and was Boston's designated hitter for Friday night vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. The veteran slugger notched a single in the first inning, but the fifth is when he did the real damage.

Martinez followed Xander Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo's back-to-back homers, and Kiké Hernandez's game-tying solo shot, with a blast of his own: a three-run moonshot to give Boston a three-run lead.

Looks like that ankle is healthy.

Martinez's go-ahead homer put the Red Sox up 8-5 after Chris Sale allowed five runs to Tampa Bay in a miserable first inning. Boston is looking to even the series at a game apiece after dropping Game 1, 5-0.
