What was intended as a relaxing beauty appointment in the company of Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has resulted in backlash for Ivanka Trump and one Des Moines hair salon.
As WHO-13 reports, President Trump‘s eldest daughter joined the governor for a visit to Salon Spa W in the Iowa capital on March 19. The two women enjoyed unspecified “services” at the salon, which offers hair, nail, and waxing treatments, as well as makeup application and facials. (The Iowa trip included a scientist photo op, which was also lambasted.)

The Salon Spa W later posted a photo of Trump and Reynolds to social media, with a note that it loved “supporting women in politics.”
But owner China Wong hadn’t expected the ladies patronage to spark outrage and a fierce political debate.

Many commenters lashed out at Trump and Reynolds, as well as the salon:
“Why would Salon W support women who are against working women?” one critic commented on Facebook. “Probably just for money and 15 minutes of fame. Sad.”
“Just lost all my respect for this business and those who run it. You should know better. … Since when is she a politician? She’s not in politics. Seriously. She’s not a politician. She was appointed to a position she has no qualifications for by her father and she does nothing to check his worst impulses, which include ABUSING WOMEN. This is so ignorant. She is not a supporter of women. She’s not a woman in politics and she’s done nothing to help women or even influence the debate or policies that affect women.”
“Then why don’t you support women in politics? These two trolls are unqualified. … Has Ivanka been elected to anything? And Reynolds? She has a couple OWIs [Reynolds was arrested on drunk-driving charges in 1999 and 2000] and has torn our state down to shreds.”
The criticism was countered by messages from Trump fans, including one poster who thanked Salon Spa W for their “support of these two awesome ladies!”
Others argued that the salon is free to serve anyone it chooses, regardless of politics. Wong confirmed that in a follow-up statement addressing the uproar. Her clients come “from all walks of life,” she said, including former President Barack Obama.
