Ivan Toney banned from football eight months following betting admission

Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months after he accepted breaking gambling rules, according to Sky Sports.

The Brentford and England striker admitted to “232 breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules, the governing body has announced.

The Athletic reports that the suspension will keep him from training until September and that Toney won’t be eligible to play in a game until mid-January 2024.

Toney, 27, is one of just three Premier League players to score 20 goals this season. He’s also pitched in four assists in league play, and has a goal and an assist in two cup games.

He made his England debut in March despite reports of this impending suspension. Toney has 68 goals in three seasons with the Bees following a loan-happy four years with Newcastle and two free-scoring years at Peterborough United.

Brentford statement on Ivan Toney suspension

Brentford FC notes the decision of an independent Regulatory Commission to issue an eight-month ban from all football and football-related activity to Ivan Toney with immediate effect.

Ivan was charged with breaches of FA rule E8 and had a personal hearing earlier this week.

Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps.
