Toews, a fourth-rounder by the Isles back in 2014, was one of the team’s more notable restricted free agents heading into this offseason. Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock were also among that group. Now with this deal, the Islanders free up some cap space and get some future selections back in the process.
Toews is a solid two-way defenseman that the Islanders liked to use on the power play specifically. However, his defensive prowess sometimes goes unnoticed, as he is extremely efficient in that area as well.
The 26-year-old Quinnipiac University product has totaled 46 points since breaking into the league in 2018. He has 11 goals and 35 assists, while recording a +8 while on the ice.
