The NHL announced on Friday evening that Islanders forward Ross Johnston has been suspended for three games and fined $15,000 for an illegal check against the Devils on Thursday night.

In the first quarter of Thursday’s 3-2 win over the Devils, Johnston checked forward A.J. Greer into the boards, extending his left elbow into Greer’s head in the process. Johnson was given a minor penalty for the hit.

Johnson’s fine will go towards the NHL’s Players’ Emergency Assistance fund.

The 27-year-old has appeared in 12 games for the Islanders this season, tallying one point while racking up 35 penalty minutes. In 86 career games with the Islanders, Johnston has accrued 202 penalty minutes.
