Islanders flying but not on the power play

Michael Finewax
Rotoworld

It’s a strange scheduling week as every team plays at least three times with Arizona, Carolina, Detroit, Edmonton and Florida playing four games.

It is a very heavy Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday schedule with only a total of nine games being played on the other four nights.

Due to the quirk in the schedule, there are only four games this week when a rested team plays a tired team.

Sidney Crosby underwent surgery on his core muscle and is out at least six weeks. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Notes

John Gibson is one of the better goalkeepers in the NHL but he has faltered of late and is 6-9-0 this season with a 2.96 GAA and a .911 save percentage. He has lost three straight. Ryan Miller has been terrific in a backup role as he is 3-0-2 this season with a 2-61 GAA and a .919 save percentage. Hampus Lindholm is still out with a lower-body injury and the Ducks as a result, recalled Josh Mahura from the minors. Nick Ritchie leads the Ducks with 26 penalty minutes, while Jakb Silfverberg, who usually comes on strong at the end of a season to get to the 20-goal mark, has nine goals in 20 games and also leads Anaheim with 17 points.

ARIZONA

Notes

The Coyotes play four games this week with three occurring in four nights. Expect to see Darcy Kuemper play at least twice with Antti Raanta playing the remainder of the games. The Coyotes also play a pair of games against the Los Angeles Kings so look for Lawson Crouse to take care of things it there are any fights. He is the only Coyote with a fighting major this season. Rookie Barrett Hayton has been a healthy scratch the last four games and you have to wonder if the Coyotes would be better off letting him play junior hockey and play for Canada at the World Juniors. He has played in nine games this season and one more NHL contest will burn a year of his entry-level contract.

BOSTON

Games this week

@ New Jersey, vs. Buffalo, vs. Minnesota

Notes

David Krejci has played quite well since returning to action after missing a couple of weeks with an upper-body injury. He has two goals and eight points in seven games since then after picking up just a point in his first five games. Torey Krug is a surprising minus-four this season, on a Bruins squad that is a plus-54. While Tuukka Rask gets the majority of the starts, Jaroslav Halak has still started seven of the Bruins 18 contests. The Bruins continue to get their scoring from their big line of Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron who have combined for 35 of the Bruins 64 goals. Only Danton Heinen has more than three and he only has four.

BUFFALO

Games this week

vs. Minnesota, @ Boston, @ Florida

Rested: @ Florida (Sunday)

Notes

After an 8-1-1 start, the Sabres have gone straight downhill as they are 1-5-2 since then. Marco Scandella returned to action Thursday after missing six games with a lower-body injury. He had a shot on goal in 15:18 of action. As a result of his return, Colin Miller was a healthy scratch. The former Golden Knight was pointless in his previous nine games before the benching. Vladimir Sobotka suffered a lower-body injury in Sweden and will be out of action for the next four-six weeks. Curtis Lazar was recalled in his place. Kyle Okposo is off to a slow start with only a goal and five points in 18 games.

Good news on the T.J. Brodie front as he was released from hospital on Thursday after suffering an apparent seizure during practice. He collapsed and was having convulsions before he was taken off the ice on a stretcher. We wish the veteran a speedy recovery and hope he is back on the ice quickly. Andrew Mangiapane was seeing action on the second line with Matthew Tkachuk and Mikael Backlund, but that changed Wednesday midway through the second period as Michael Frolik took his spot. Mangiapane played the rest of the game with Sam Bennett and Derek Ryan. David Rittich is on pace to play 60-plus games as Cam Talbot has started only five of 21 games while Rittich has been in 16 contests.

CAROLINA

Games this week

Notes

The Hurricanes play four games this week including three games in four nights. Expect to see Petr Mrazek in the cage on three occasions with James Reimer getting the call once. Andrei Svechnikov continues to shine. The 19-year-old who was selected second overall in the 2018 Draft, had a goal and two assists Thursday to give him eight goals and 21 points in 19 games. He is tied for the team lead in scoring with defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Erik Haula returned to action Thursday. He started on the fourth line with Brian Gibbons and Brock McGinn and should move up the depth charts. Martin Necas, the Canes first pick and 12th overall in 2017, has seven points in his last seven games and should be considered in deeper pools.

CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. Carolina, vs. Tampa Bay, @ Dallas

Notes

The Blackhawks sent their first-round pick from 2018 (and eighth overall) Adam Boqvist back to the minors Thursday. After a huge 2018-19 season, Erik Gustafsson finally potted his first of the season Wednesday. He has five points in 17 games thus far after a 60-point performance last season. Dylan Strome is heating up with eight points in his last four games, as well as eight penalty minutes. He is up to four goals and 15 points in 18 games and his plus-nine leads the Blackhawks. He is on the top line, alongside Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat. Kane is hot as well, as he is on a seven-game points streak in which he had five goals and 14 points.

COLORADO

Notes

The Avalanche are hurting in net as both Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz are out of action. That forced the Avs to start Adam Werner Thursday with Antoine Bibeau as his backup. Werner was great on Tuesday as he stopped all 40 shots against the Jets after replacing the injured Francouz just 31 seconds into the contest. It was a different story Thursday as Connor McDavid and the Oilers pumped five shots past him in 18 attempts before he was pulled early in the second. Mikko Rantanen has started to skate on his own. Cale Makar, the early favorite for the Calder Trophy, has 18 points in 19 games.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

vs. Montreal, vs. Detroit, @ Winnipeg

Notes

Congratulations to Eric Robinson who scored his first career NHL goal Tuesday. Backup goaltender Elvis Merzlikins is back up in the NHL and is still winless as he dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to Montreal. Since his awful start in which he gave up seven goals on 40 shots to Pittsburgh, he has lost his other three starts in extra time. Ryan Murray returned to action this past week after missing six games with a broken hand. Nick Foligno was suspended for three games for his charge on Pierre-Edouard Bellemare of the Avalanche Saturday. He will return against Montreal on Tuesday. Kole Sherwood was put on the injured reserve list with an oblique tear.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. Vancouver, vs. Winnipeg, vs. Chicago

Notes

The Stars started the season poorly at 2-7-1 but have turned things around completely as they are 8-1-1 in their last ten to get back into the playoff race. Dallas is still lacking in scoring as Tyler Seguin leads the team with only 13 points in 20 games but the Stars are getting great goaltending as Ben Bishop has a 2.12 GAA while Anton Khudobin has a 2.37 GAA. Andrew Cogliano missed a rare game Thursday with a lower-body injury. He had missed only six games in 13-year NHL career heading into action this week. Roope Hintz, the Stars leading goal scorer with nine goals in 15 games, was placed on the injured reserve list, dating back to November 2 with a lower-body injury. He could return at any time. Congratulations to Corey Perry who played in his 1,000th NHL game on Wednesday.

DETROIT

Notes

The Red Wings return from California this week and play three games in four nights as part of a four-game week. The Red Wings have been splitting the net so look for Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier to share the games. After going the first 13 games of the season without a goal, Andreas Athanasiou has three in his last six games. He had 30 last season. The Red Wings made a good move in getting Robby Fabbri from the Blues as he has two goals and four points in four games. Tyler Bertuzzi is heating up with two goals and four assists in his last four games to move into second place in Detroit scoring with 20 points.

EDMONTON

Games this week

Notes

The Oilers play all four games this week on the road including three games in four nights. Look for Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen to share the net this week. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for 11 points Thursday in a 6-2 win over Colorado. McDavid had the hat trick and three assists while Draisaitl, who leads the NHL with 41 points in 21 games, had five helpers. McDavid has 37 points and the duo sit 1-2 in NHL scoring, with David Pastrnak third at 31 points. The Oilers recalled Caleb Jones from the minors and placed Brandon Manning on the injured reserve list. Oscar Klefbom has five assists in his last three games after going 11 games with nary a point.

Notes

The Panthers play four times this week including three games in four nights. Sergei Bobrovsky should be between the pipes three times with Sam Montembeault playing once.  Bobrovsky has continued to struggle as he has lost three straight games. He is 6-4-4 with a 3.57 GAA and a .880 save percentage. The Panthers gave him $70 million over seven seasons and need him to be a lot better than that. Keith Yandle is heating up with 10 points over his last seven games after picking up only five in his first 12 contests. Dryden Hunt leads the Panthers with 24 penalty minutes in 19 games. He also has four assists.

LOS ANGELES

Notes

The Kings play the Coyotes twice this week and if there is any rough stuff, look for Kyle Clifford to be in the middle of things. The Ilya Kovalchuk saga continues as he took part in practice Thursday after being a healthy scratch on Tuesday but was not in the lineup on Thursday as well. He gets a big bonus on December 15 and look for a release or trade after that. Anze Kopitar is on a five-game points streak with goals in each of his last three games and five assists. He leads the Kings with 21 points in 19 games. Unfortunately, he gets little help offensively as Drew Doughty is second in points with 11.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

@ Buffalo, vs. Colorado, @ Boston

Notes

Devan Dubnyk continues to struggle this season as he is 4-8-1 with a 3.30 GAA and a .896 save percentage. There is not a lot to like fantasy-wise on the Wild this season as Eric Staal leads the team in points but has only 14 in 19 games with a minus-12 rating. Ryan Hartman is tops in penalty minutes with 31 and has a couple of goals and two assists. Matt Dumba has been a major disappointment. He had 12 goals in 32 games last season before suffering a season-ending torn pectoral muscle injury. He was highly thought of this season but has only three goals and eight points in 19 games. One piece of good news in that Kirill Kaprizov, a highly-regarded Russian (and the Wild’s top prospect) who was taken in the fifth round of the 2015 Draft, could be headed to the NHL next season. He has 13 goals and 25 points in 23 KHL games.

MONTREAL

Rested: vs. New York Rangers (Saturday)

Notes

The Canadiens have been getting excellent goaltending from Carey Price who is 9-4-2 with a 2.65 GAA and a .916 save percentage this season. Ryan Poehling was sent back to the AHL after not be able to pick up a point in four games. He had a hat trick last season in his only game after signing out of St. Cloud. Montreal is getting balanced scoring as four players (Tomas Tatar, Jonathan Drouin, Brendan Gallagher and Shea Weber) have either 15 or 14 points this season. Max Domi leads Montreal with five power play points. Jesperi Kotkaniemi is close to returning from a groin injury but has missed the last six games.

NASHVILLE

Notes

Viktor Arvidsson had 34 goals in only 58 games last season and most pundits had him penciled in for at least 40 if he remained healthy this season. Well, the winger has six in 18 games thus far including only one in his last nine contests. Mikael Granlund has also disappointed this season with only five points in 18 games including a minus-one rating. The only other minus player in the Nashville lineup with more than one point is Matt Duchene who is a minus-three, albeit with 15 points in 17 games. Granlund and Arvidsson switched lines in practice earlier in the week as Granlund is skating with Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg while Arvidsson is now alongside Duchene and Calle Jarnkrok.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

vs. Boston, @ Pittsburgh, vs. Detroit

Tired: vs. Detroit (Saturday)

Rested: @ Pittsburgh (Friday)

Notes

The Devils are not having a good season with only 14 points in 17 games as they are 5-8-4. There were ‘Fire Hynes’ chants happening Wednesday as the Devils dropped a 4-2 decision to Ottawa. Sami Vatanen is still out with an upper-body injury but is skating on his own. He was injured a week ago. Taylor Hall has not scored in his last six games but has 23 shots on goal in that time frame. Wayne Simmonds has only three goals this season but one in each of his last two games. The Devils have only two players in double figures in points as Hall has 15 in 17 games while Kyle Palmieri has 11. Jack Hughes is next with nine.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, vs. Pittsburgh, @ San Jose

Notes

The Islanders play the Penguins in a home-and-home series this week. Expect to see Ross Johnston to see some action if there is any rough stuff going on. He has 35 penalty minutes in 10 games. The Islanders are the hottest team in the NHL at this time with a 13-3-1 record and are 11-0-1 in their last 12 contests. The weird thing is that they are getting few power play chances as they have a league-low 31 opportunities in 17 games. That is 19 less than the second worst team in the NHL, the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have played one less game. Usually the best teams are the strongest on the power play and draw plenty of penalties, but not the Islanders. Andrew Ladd was placed on waivers Thursday and should be headed for the minors Friday to get in some playing time.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

vs. Washington, @ Ottawa, @ Montreal

Tired: @ Montreal (Saturday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Rangers play three games in four nights this week so expect to see Henrik Lundqvist between the pipes twice with Alexandar Georgiev playing once. Georgiev gave up five goals on 26 shots Thursday before he was pulled before the halfway mark of the second. Lundqvist mopped up and wasn’t anything special, giving up four goals on 19 shots. Jacob Trouba suffered an upper-body injury Thursday but hopes to be back in the lineup on November 16. Kaapo Kakko has three goals in his last two games but missed Thursday’s tilt against the Lightning with the flu. He is starting to show why he was the second overall pick in June as he also has five goals in his last seven contests. The Rangers are hopeful that Mika Zibanejad can rejoin the team this week. He has been out with an upper-body injury since October 27.

Notes

The Senators play three games in four nights. Coach D.J. Smith has been sharing the net between Craig Anderson and Anders Nilsson so it is up in the air as to who will get the third game this week. Jean-Gabriel Pageau leads the Senators with 11 goals and 15 points and continues to lead the NHL with a plus-19 rating. Connor Brown is close behind with 14 points including 12 helpers. The Senators sent Rudolfs Balcers back to the minors. He was part of the Erik Karlsson trade with San Jose. Colin White scored Monday. It was his second goal of the season as he missed seven games with a hip flexor/groin injury. Mark Borowiecki is having a nice fantasy season with two goals and seven points as well as 29 penalty minutes and a plus-eight rating. Logan Brown was activated Friday from the injured reserve list.

Carter Hart is back on track as he is 4-0-1 in his last five starts, giving up nine goals on 148 shots. Overall, he is 6-3-2 with a 2.53 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Oskar Lindblom has been a nice surprise for the Flyers this season as he has eight goals and 14 points in 17 games. He has three goals on the power play and is a vital member of the Flyers top-nine. Travis Konecny continues to shine despite seeing his four-game scoring streak end Wednesday. He has eight goals and 19 points in 18 contests. Defenseman Philippe Myers saw his three-game goal scoring streak come to an end in the same game.

PITTSBURGH

Notes

The Penguins play three games in four nights so look for Matt Murray to get a pair of starts with Tristan Jarry getting the call once. Pittsburgh also plays a home-and-home series against the Islanders so expect to see Teddy Blueger add to his penalty minute count if there are any fisticuffs. The big news out of Pittsburgh this week was the injury and subsequent surgery to repair a core muscle to Sidney Crosby who will be out of action for a minimum of six weeks. The top line in Pittsburgh is now Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust with Alex Galchenyuk, Nick Bjugstad and Sam Lafferty completing the top-six.

Notes

Vladimir Tarasenko is not sure if he will be able to return before the end of the regular season from his shoulder surgery, two-and-a-half weeks ago. The Blues recalled forward Klim Kostin from the minors and he could make his NHL debut. The center was taken in the first round, 31st overall, in 2017. Jake Allen is seeing little action as the backup in St. Louis as he has only started four games. The netminder is 3-1-0 with a 3.29 GAA and a .882 save percentage, far worse than starter Jordan Binnington who is 9-2-4 with a 2.35 GAA and a .921 save percentage. David Perron became the first NHLer in history to score three overtime winners before his team’s 20th game of the season.

SAN JOSE

Notes

Tomas Hertl has been on fire of late with six goals and nine points in a five-game scoring streak in which he has at least one goal in each game. Timo Meier has also picked up the pace after a poor start as he has three goals and nine points during his five-game points streak. Meier started the season with only four points in his first 15 games after a 30 goal, 66-point season last year. Evander Kane is seeing top line minutes with Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc after the Sharks took Patrick Marleau off the line. Barclay Goodrow has been great fantasy-wise with five goals and 10 points in 20 games as well as 40 penalty minutes. He has two goals and seven points in his last seven games.

TAMPA BAY

Notes

After a slow start (for him) to the season, Nikita Kucherov had a four-point night Thursday to give him 17 points in 16 games. The Art Ross Trophy winner from last season, still managed to lose ground in the scoring race as the Oilers Leon Draisaitl had five assists Thursday. Kevin Shattenkirk had a goal and an assist Thursday and continues to return to his old form as the defenseman has five goals and 15 points in 16 games. He was not the same during his two years in New York with the Rangers as he had seven goals and 51 points in 119 games but he has had a resurgence with the Lightning. Steven Stamkos leads the Lightning with 18 points but he is a minus-six.

Notes

The Maple Leafs picked up a huge injury on the weekend when Mitch Marner suffered an ankle injury that will sideline him for another three-five weeks. They got Zach Hyman back in the lineup Wednesday as he had missed the start of the season recovering from off-season knee surgery. The Maple Leafs finally got rid of backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson as he was 0-4-1 this season with a 4.44 GAA and a .879 save percentage. He was sent to the minors after passing through waivers and Toronto recalled Kasimire Kaskisuo who could make his NHL debut on November 16 as the Maple Leafs play the bottom half of back-to-back games. Alexander Kerfoot is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to fix facial dental fractures that occurred a week earlier. Auston Matthews has 13 goals and 26 points in 20 games.

VANCOUVER

Notes

The Canucks are on the road for all three this week. Brandon Sutter is out with a groin strain. Tyler Graovac was recalled to replace him. Adam Gaudette has two goals and four points in 10 games this season with half his points coming on the power play. Antoine Roussel partook in his first practice of the season as he is still on the mend recovering from off-season knee surgery. He is still not allowed contact but is expected to return within a month. He is someone to add if you need penalty minutes. Bo Horvat has six goals and 15 points in 20 games but five of his goals, as well as three assists, have come on the power play.

Marc-Andre Fleury has been slumping of late, as he is 1-2-1 in the last two weeks and he has given up 15 goals in the three games on only 118 shots.  Still, his stats are quite good as he is 9-5-1 with a 2.68 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Reilly Smith continues to lead the Golden Knights in goals with 10. Alex Tuch returned to action on Wednesday and picked up an assist. The forward has played only three games this season and has a goal and an assist as he has been out with an upper-body injury. The Golden Knights have some cap issues and as a result Cody Glass and Nicolas Hague were sent to the minors and then recalled without missing a game.

Notes

As hot as the Islanders have been, the Capitals are just as hot, as they are 11-0-1 in their last 12 and have not lost in regulation since October 14. Braden Holtby can’t get his GAA under three as it sits at 3.06 but he is finally over the .900 mark in save percentage at .903 and there is nothing to sneeze at with his record at 9-1-3. John Carlson continues to sparkle, leading all defensemen in the NHL with 30 points and is tied for fourth in overall scoring, behind Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and David Pastrnak. Carl Hagelin is still day-to-day with an upper-body injury suffered on November 7 and has yet to resume skating. Richard Panik returned to the lineup Monday after missing 10 games with an upper-body injury.

Notes

Blake Wheeler has had back-to-back 91-point seasons but he is going to have to get quite hot if he wants to match that mark this year. The veteran forward has only five goals and five assists in 20 games and is on pace for a 41-point season, fifty less than last season. Mark Scheifele leads the Jets in points with 20 while Josh Morrissey leads all Winnipeg rearguards with 12 points, one better than Neal Pionk. Connor Hellebuyck is in fine form with an 8-6-1 record to go with a 2.40 GAA and a .928 save percentage. Dmitry Kulikov is the only Jet in double figures in penalty minutes and he has 16 as the Jets have only 87 minutes in 20 games this season.
