Ish Smith not expected to miss time despite getting stitches originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Late in the first quarter of the Wizards' loss to the Raptors on Wednesday, point guard Ish Smith got the worse end of a collision with Toronto big man Chris Boucher. He took a charge, but got a busted lip in the process, one so bad that it required stitches and kept him out the rest of the game.

Head coach Scott Brooks shared some of the uncomfortable details in his postgame press conference.

"He got hit in the mouth. He was bleeding from inside and outside. [He got] stitches and we just couldn’t control it," Brooks said.

Brooks, though, did say he expects Smith to play on Friday against the Knicks, and that's good because the Wizards could use him. Smith, 32, has proven to be a valuable piece of the Wizards' rotation this season.

Among regular rotation players, he has the best on/off rating at +15.8 in 379 minutes, per Basketball Reference. That is over 10 points better than the next guy with at least 300 minutes played, Davis Bertans, who is +5.2.

Smith is not having his best season statistically overall. He's averaging only 5.5 points per game, his lowest since 2013-14. And he's shooting a not-so-great 38.9% from the field and 26.3% from three.

But Smith has proven to be a good change-of-pace for Russell Westbrook on the nights he struggles. Smith's 1.7 turnovers per-36 minutes are less than a third of Westbrook's 5.3.

Barring something unforeseen, Smith should be back in there on Friday vs. New York.

"He’s going to be in a lot of pain for the next 48 hours. But he’s a tough young man and he will bounce back," Brooks said.
