Iowa boys spring golf state round-up: ADM, Beckman Catholic, Boyer Valley win team titles

AMES — Adel-Desoto-Minburn made the most of its shortened time on the golf course during the Class 3A boys state golf meet Monday.

The boys spring golf state meets were scheduled to take place Monday and Tuesday at three different golf courses in Ames, but Tuesday's competition was canceled due to a severe thunderstorm that went through the area in the morning.

ADM coach Nolan Gitch said his team knew it was possible it wouldn't get the chance to golf Tuesday due to the weather. So, the Tigers took care of business on Monday, shooting a 304 over 18 holes on the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

That effort put the Tigers three strokes ahead of Waverly-Shell Rock (307) for first in 3A, and with Tuesday's competition rained out, it earned them a team state championship.

"We try to take it one day at a time," Gitch said. "We set ourselves up in case of inclement weather and Easton (Korell) couldn't have picked a better time to have the round of his life."

Korell was the 3A individual title winner after shooting a 6-under-par round of 66 on Monday.

Korell was grouped with MOC-Floyd Valley's Carson Korver and defending individual champion Roman Roth of Washington. He said playing with those two provided a calming effect for him on the course.

"I really tried to make yesterday (Monday) count," Korell said. I thought to myself that yesterday could be my last round of golf for ADM. I didn't realize how I was playing until the end when I realized I was doing something special for my team and myself."

Korell finished two strokes ahead of runner-up Isaiah Zoske of Solon, who carded a 4-under score of 68. Nevada freshman Parker Rodgers won a card-back with Korver and Roth for third.

ADM's Easton Korell was the individual title winner at the 3A boys state golf meet after shooting a 6-under-par round of 66 over 18 holes Monday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames on Monday.

ADM displayed great depth to earn its team title.

Carter Madison tied for 13th with a 6-over score of 78 and Grant Jansen and Finn Garton both finished in a three-way tie for 20th with North Polk's Jacob Eagan after they each shot an 80. Grant Hickey tied for 23rd with an 81 and Lincoln Banwart tied for 34th with an 84 for the Tigers.

Beckman Catholic edges out Pella Christian in 2A

Beckman Catholic defeated Pella Christian by one stroke in a tight 2A team race.

The Blazers shot a 306 over 18 holes at the Coldwater Golf Links in Ames on Monday to edge out the Eagles' score of 307. Grund Center was only two strokes behind in third place with a 308, and Columbus Catholic was three strokes back in fourth with a 309.

Beckman Catholic senior Luke Harwick was the 2A individual winner with a 3-under-par score of 68. Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove's Axton Miller was runner-up with a 2-under score of 69 and East Marshall's Cody Weaver took third with a 1-under round of 70.

Boyden-Hull cruises to 1A team championship

Unlike the 3A and 2A competitions, the 1A team race was not close.

Boyden-Hull shot an even 300 on Monday at the Ames Golf and Country Club to win the 1A team championship by 14 strokes over Akron-Westfield (314). Lake Mills took third out of nine teams in 1A with a 319.

Hamburg sophomore Keith Thompson shot a 2-under score of 69 to win the individual title in 1A. CAM's Chase Jahde was the only other 1A player to shoot under par, finishing with a 1-under score of 70 as the runner-up.

Carter Kleinwolterink led Boydel Hull with a 2-over score of 71 to tie Lake Mills' Austin Stene for third. Jackson Keizer and Trey Van Roekel each carded a 75 to finish in a four-way tie for fifth and Reece Koele tied for 10th with a 77 for Boyden Hull.
