Nevin Shapiro on Campbell: Play audio

Miami booster Nevin Shapiro alleges he provided extra benefits to Calais Campbell on a handful of occasions during his career. Among the benefits he claimed to have provided:

Calais Campbell

• Position: Defensive end

• Rivals recruiting rank: Ranked as the No. 10 defensive end in the Class of 2004.

• Miami career: A two-year starter and three-year contributor for the Hurricanes who developed into one of the best defensive linemen in the country. He was selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals after leaving Miami following his junior season. He is a starter for the Cardinals.

• Food, drinks and entertainment at Shapiro's $6 million Miami Beach mansion.

• An August 2006 dinner at Italian eatery Grazie in which Shapiro personally drove Campbell to the restaurant.

• At least one occasion where Shapiro provided VIP access and drinks at a nightclub.

• Yahoo! Sports acquired Shapiro's August 2006 American Express Platinum card statement showing a charge of $926.50 for the Grazie dinner Shapiro said was attended by Campbell.

• "Calais Campbell hung out with me a few times. He was in my house once or twice. He was pretty nice kid. Quiet, got real cocky later on once he became a household name because of his size."

• "He was specifically at a dinner that I had put together at Café Grazie before the season started for about 10 guys. He was one of them there. I remember him [riding] in my front seat because his knees were over his head. He could hardly even fit in the seat."

This page from Nevin Shapiro's August 2006 American Express Platinum card statement shows a charge of $926.50 that the booster identified as a preseason dinner at Miami Beach eatery Grazie. Shapiro said he attended the dinner and paid for the meals of seven players: Randy Phillips, Calais Campbell, Bryan Pata, Eric Moncur, Courtney Harris, Anthony Reddick and Reggie Youngblood. An employee from Grazie declined to give specific accounts of meals but confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that Shapiro regularly brought Hurricanes players into the eatery to dine. PDF file

This page from Nevin Shapiro's February 2007 American Express black card statement shows a charge of $1,099.32 that the booster identified as a postseason dinner at Miami Beach eatery Grazie. Shapiro said he attended the dinner and paid for the meals of at least five players: Randy Phillips, Calais Campbell, Courtney Harris, Anthony Reddick and Orlando Franklin (who was a redshirting freshman at the time). Calais Campbell did not return a message left on his last known telephone number. However, he told Yahoo! Sports in January that he did not know who Shapiro was. “I really don’t know what he did,” Campbell said of what Shapiro’s relationship was to players at Miami. “I really didn’t know the guy, so I can’t answer that.”
