‘Insecure’ star tears up telling parents about her first Emmy nomination

“Insecure” fans rejoice, the HBO sitcom has finally scored a slew of Emmy nominations.

Not only was the series nominated for Outstanding Comedy but stars Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji snagged noms for Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a comedy. While Rae received a nomination in 2018, this marked Orji’s first. Of course, the actress and comedian had to share the moment with her parents.

The Nigerian-American posted a clip of her dropping the big news on her mom and dad over FaceTime. Orji has been open, like many children of immigrants, about her parents adjusting to the idea of her going into the entertainment business instead of something more traditional. So the moment is huge.

“Meeeeeeaaann. My heart is so full. Had to call the parentals… and they Did. Not. Disappoint. They had jokes, prophesies and praises,” Orji wrote in the video caption.

She tells them the news in the video and her parents seem a bit overwhelmed.

“Oh my goodness,” her mother repeats several times. “Not even one of the little ones.”

Orji’s parents sound confident that she and the show would win.

“We’re proud of you,” Orji’s father says and she’s instantly brought to tears.

The comedian portrays Molly, a polarizing but beloved character who is navigating work-life balance and romance on the series.

“I feel like in order for Molly to get here it took all four seasons — it took the build-up, you had to see every side of her,” Orji told the Hollywood Reporter. “I feel like this is a collective celebration because it’s like yes, real-life was portrayed on TV and we all got to see it and we all got to experience it.”
