Indianapolis southside is getting a new Asian grocery store, featuring Southeast Asian foods
A blue and white "coming soon" sign announces Tial Thang's latest business venture to passersby at the intersection of Madison and East Epler avenues.
Khambawi Asian Mart, 5501 Madison Ave., soon will fill the southside storefront in Perry Township near Homecroft.

The grocery store will feature a variety of Southeast Asian food products, with selections of Burmese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisines.
"We mix all the items," Thang said.
Khambawi Asian Mart joins the ranks of several Asian grocery stores in Indianapolis, including another location run by Thang and his family at 7007 U.S. 31 S near East Southport Road.
Picking another location in the southside came down to customer interest, Thang said, adding that his business is frequented by the Burmese community in the area.

The timeframe to open remains uncertain because of the location's setup, but Thang said they are aiming for March. After purchasing the building, they are painting, repairing the roof and installing a refrigerator and freezer for storage.
With more space than their other location, Thang said they will be able to offer more products, like dry and frozen foods, for shoppers.

Khambawi Restaraunt & Grocery started offering grocery items in 2014 but then expanded to menu selections in 2021, Thang said.
The restaurant offers a variety of Indonesian and Burmese cuisine, including Sambal fried rice and curry, according to its Facebook page.
