Inclement weather cancels high school track and field meet, UNM baseball game

Apr. 6—High winds are responsible for the cancellation of two outdoor sporting events on Saturday.

The second and final day of the Albuquerque Invitational at Nusenda Community Stadium, a high school track and field meet, was canceled after only three field events this morning.

Also, the UNM baseball nonconference matchup against San Houston State — slated for a 2 p.m. start today at Santa Ana Star Field — has been canceled and will not be made up.

The series finale between the Lobos and Bearkats is still set for noon on Sunday.

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory though 8 p.m. Saturday for the middle Rio Grande area, including Albuquerque, due to critical fire weather conditions.

The advisory states: "Very strong westerly winds will develop by late morning behind a cold front that swept through the area this morning. Low humidity values in combination with these winds will create critical fire weather conditions for the Rio Grande Valley and all of eastern New Mexico despite well below normal temperatures. Winds will not be as strong on Sunday, but gusty westerly winds will be strong."

The NWS predicts wind gusts from 41 to 47 miles per hour into late Saturday evening for the Albuquerque area.
