Important NFL dates, times for Chiefs in June of 2023

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of completing organized team activities and look to wrap Phase 3 of the offseason workout program in June. This is the last month before the team kicks things into high gear in late July ahead of the 2023 NFL season. There are also some key dates and events specific to the Chiefs coming this month.

Here’s a quick look at the NFL calendar for June and what fans should be aware of over the course of the next month:

The Chiefs will continue OTAs through the end of May and the first day of June. They’re managing to get some really good work in after having a virtual Phase 1 of the offseason program and ramping things up in Phase 2. This period is where they can lay a foundation — especially for the new players — that will bleed over into training camp and the regular season.

This is the deadline for the Chiefs to use the “June 1 Tender” on any unsigned restricted free agents who received a qualifying offer. This action would cause such players to be subject to the CBA’s “June 15 Tender” provision. Even though Tommy Townsend and Tershawn Wharton were both restricted free agents this offseason, the team won’t be using this. Townsend already signed his tender and Wharton signed a new deal.

June 2: Money comes off the books for players who were cut with “post-June 1” designation

Players designated as a “post-June 1” cut in the offseason will see their contracts come off the books on this date. Several NFL teams will see a boost to their cap space at this time. The Chiefs didn’t designate any players as a “post-June 1” cut this year, so they won’t be benefiting in any way from this rule. The last player that the team released in this fashion was S Eric Berry.

June 5: Chiefs visit White House

The Chiefs defeated the Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII back in February. They’ll become the first members of the organization to visit the White House following a Super Bowl win. COVID-19 stopped the team from the ceremonial trip following their Super Bowl LIV win against the 49ers. Richard Nixon didn’t invite the team to the White House when Kansas City won Super Bowl IV.

June 6-9: Final week of OTAs

The final leg of voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) begins in the second week of June. Typically, this week of OTAs is the most well-attended as players and coaches want to finish strong. These are still non-contact practices, but teams are permitted to reintroduce 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 team drills. If this week of work goes well, Andy Reid could even let everyone off the hook a day early.

For the first time this offseason, all 90 players on the roster are required to be in attendance for offseason workouts. Teams are allowed to impose fines on players should they skip these workouts. These are not all that different from OTA practices other than the fact that they’re mandatory. The Chiefs aren’t allowed to have padded full-contact practices and all the Phase 3 guidelines remain the same.

The Chiefs typically finalize and announce their training camp schedule in mid-to-late June. Last year, the schedule came out on June 17. Training camp usually kicks off in the final week of July and carries through the middle of August into the preseason. The team will be back in St. Joseph, Missouri again this year for training camp at Western Missouri State University after picking up their option years in 2023 and 2024.
