Ike Irish named to NCBWA Second Team Preseason All-America

Auburn starting catcher Ike Irish was named a Preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Tuesday afternoon.

The sophomore backstop earned Second Team honors after an impressive freshmen season that saw him earn a spot on the 2023 SEC All-Freshmen Team as well as the NCBWA Freshmen All-America Team.

While Irish may have had some luck on his side a season ago, there was no doubting the catcher’s pure skill after he hit for a team-high .361 average and slugged his way to a near 1.000 OPS.

The 19-year-old also collected a Tiger freshmen record 24 doubles, a team-high 86 hits and was second of all Auburn ballplayers with 50 runs batted in on the season. One of the few things missing from Irish’s game was the long ball, as his six total home runs were mediocre at best.

It wouldn’t be surprising at all to see the Tigers best player add some power to his game this season, especially considering he’s already shown a knack for extra-base hits.

We’ll see if the catcher can challenge for SEC Player of the Year honors when the Tigers open the season on February 16 in Plainsman Park against Eastern Kentucky.
