Ian Rapoport discusses Josh McDaniels in relation to Jaguars head-coaching job

It’s about that time of year that Josh McDaniels’ name is attached to open head-coaching jobs.

The New England Patriots offensive coordinator has been with the team for over 20 years collectively, outside of his departure for a three-year stint in between. He’s Bill Belichick’s right-hand man and that was enough to keep McDaniels around, even after he agreed to the Indianapolis Colts’ head-coaching position in 2018.

The Patriots are in a “rebuild” year, but McDaniels has done a phenomenal job of coaching up rookie Mac Jones in a short amount of time. He’s done so well that many people around the NFL have wondered what he could do with Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. Urban Meyer was fired after a lackluster season thus far and the Jaguars are now in need of a head coach.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport joined WEEI’s “Gresh & Keefe” on Friday and discussed the likelihood of McDaniels considering the job.

“I think a better question is, is this a job Josh McDaniels would want? As he goes into this process now, that should be the question every time,” Rapoport said. “It’s a weird year for head-coach candidates. I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of great candidates. This will probably be more of a year for the retreads, former head coaches than anything else — Dan Quinn, Doug Peterson and Vance Joseph. I think those guys will be kind of hotter than some of the younger guys, but obviously Josh is in that category.

“It’s just you do have Trevor Lawrence, who I think is going to be good, but honestly, watching him this year you really don’t know. Then you have an owner who has not covered himself in glory over his 10 years, or whatever it is in the NFL. [McDaniels] needs to make sure to look for a good, stable properly operating franchise, and I don’t know if this is one that he would want.”

As Rapoport stated, there doesn’t seem to be a strong enough foundation in Jacksonville to lure McDaniels in.
