I put Knix's Super Leakproof Underwear to the test, and now I'm a total convert

Let’s be real, periods are not a fun time. While I’m lucky enough that I don’t deal with painful menstruation or cramps, otherwise known as dysmenorrhea, I’m always on the lookout for products that can make that time of the month slightly more enjoyable.
My latest find not only eliminates the need for pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, it also majorly cuts down on waste from disposable period products for a more sustainable approach to menstrual health.
What is it?
The new line of Super Leakproof Underwear from Knix is the first product of its kind, holding up to 40 ml of liquid (that’s eight regular tampons worth) and completely replacing the need for disposable period and bladder leak products. Suitable for use as both a menstrual and an incontinence product, the underwear comes in five comfortable and flattering cuts that fit seamlessly into your lingerie drawer.
Each style comes in sizes S-XXXL, and is made with triple layer technology to lock in leaks before they happen. A moisture-wicking anti-odour carbon cotton sits smooth against the body, while a polyester moisture-lock provides added protection and a leak-resistant exterior provides superior absorption.

First impressions
I’ve been a fan of Knix’s Leakproof Underwear for years, but previously only kept it on hand for lighter flow days that didn’t require the use of pads or tampons. Once I heard about the new Super Leakproof option though, I had to put it to the test to see how it really holds up in real life.
When three pairs of the new undies were delivered, I was excited to see that they still had the signature Knix stretch fabric and comfort that I’d come to know and love, with a few key changes. The gusset on the new Super Leakproof line is noticeably bulkier than some of their other styles, but still less than what you’d expect to find in the average pad.
They also come in a range of colours, from classic black and beige to limited-edition shades and patterns. Compared to other reusable period products, one of the major benefits to the Knix Super Leakproof Underwear is its low maintenance care. All Leakproof underwear is machine washable, and can even be thrown into the dryer for easy wash and wear care.
Super Leakproof?
When you get down to the nitty-gritty, in my experience the Super Leakproof Underwear truly held up to its name. I’d say that I have an average to light flow, and one pair would easily last me a full day of wear. When I wore them on the two heaviest days of my cycle, I didn’t have any issues with leaks, smell or discomfort, aside from a slight feeling of wetness that quickly dissipates.

I tried out a pair of the Super Leakproof High Rise, the Super Leakproof Bikini, and the Super Leakproof Thong. Despite the care instructions on the Knix website, to get the best wear out of them, I give each pair of underwear a rinse after I’m finished wearing them before running it through the washing machine in a wash bag. I’ll also let them hang dry rather than put them in the dryer, because I’ve found that they can shrink a bit with the extra heat.
Are they worth it?
Starting at $34 a pair, they are priced at the high end of what I would normally pay for underwear, but the quality lasts for years and you’ll also save money in the long run on pads or tampons.
While I’ll say that I’m definitely a convert to the world of period underwear for their convenience and low environmental impact, if you’re someone with a heavier flow or you’re new to period underwear, you may feel more comfortable keeping the Knix Super Leakproof Underwear on as backup alongside a tampon or menstrual cup until you get used to wearing them. I’d also suggest investing in at least two pairs, so you’ll always have access to a clean pair of underwear while one is in the wash.
