Huge second half boosts Steers past Lubbock Christian

Jan. 13—LUBBOCK — Down by one point at halftime, Farwell put together back-to-back 20-point quarters to pull away from Lubbock Christian 69-53 on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Braddock Foster poured in 21 points for the Steers (13-9). Junior Ryder McElroy and senior Ruben Molina each added 11 points.

The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Lions (12-6). Leading the way for Lubbock Christian were seniors Trew Farris with 14 points and Carson Farnsley with 13.

In other area boys action on Tuesday:

Gruver 82, Bovina 32 — At Bovina, the visiting Greyhounds lived up to their nickname, racing out to a 21-6 lead at the quarter and dominating the Mustangs the rest of the way.

Senior Colt Matthews led a balanced attack for Gruver (7-12) with 15 points, while sophomore Briggs Satterfield added 13 and sophomore Caden Armes scored 11. All told, 10 players scored for the Greyhounds, including nine with at least five points.

For Bovina (8-12), which dropped its second in a row after winning eight of nine, senior Miguel Lopez notched 10 points.

In Tuesday girls tilts:

Farwell 73, Bovina 15 — The Lady Blue (20-3, 2-0 District 3-2A) reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in 10 seasons, the exceptions being 2015-16 and 2020-21 when they won 19 in both campaigns.

High scorers for the Lady Blue were junior Bella Jaime with 20 points and senior Chloee Whitten with 10. Farwell, which led 55-4 at halftime, got at least three points from each of its 10 players in uniform.

Meantime, Destiny Lara topped the homestanding Fillies (5-12, 0-2) with nine points.

Brownfield 45, Muleshoe 28 — At Muleshoe, the visiting Lady Cubs opened an 11-2 lead at the quarter and kept the Lady Mules at bay the rest of the contest.

Senior Amery Pauda and junior Maya Martinez each put in nine points for Brownfield (12-14, 4-1 District 3-3A). For Muleshoe (5-16, 1-4), senior Payton Otwell scored six points and junior Aubrey Granados added five.
