Hue Jackson will be getting paid by the Browns as he plays them
Just when you think the Cleveland Browns can’t Brown any harder, they find a way. The latest: Cleveland will be paying former head coach Hue Jackson more Sunday to coach against them than the Bengals are paying him to coach for them.
According to an ESPN report, the Browns are paying Jackson $4.75 million in base salary this year, while the Bengals are paying him only a pro-rated portion of $250,000. From a per-game perspective, that means Cleveland will be paying Jackson more than $280,000 to coach against them, while the Bengals will be paying him about $16,000 to share his insights about the Browns.
Jackson was fired on Oct. 29 after coaching Cleveland to a 3-36-1 record. He was hired by Cincinnati shortly afterward. While the idea of hiring a coach with inside info on Cleveland is a good — if perhaps unnecessary — cloak-and-dagger tale, Jackson has a long history with Cincinnati, including a stint as an offensive coordinator just before going to Cleveland.
