HS TENNIS: Scranton Prep delivers impressive win for new coach
Aug. 24—SCRANTON — During a stellar playing career, Kendra Croker had some memorable victories on the Scranton Prep tennis courts.
On Wednesday, she earned her first as a coach for the Classics.
In Scranton Prep's opener, Croker's team delivered a 5-0 win over West Scranton in a Lackawanna League match.
"I am so excited," Croker said. "I think I am more excited than I was when I was a player. It is a new chapter in my life. All of the girls are great, and it is awesome to be their coach."
Croker, a former District 2 Class 2A champion and All-Region athlete, took over as the new mentor of the Classics following the retirement of Kathleen McKenna.
Scranton Prep is the defending league and District 2 Class 2A team champion and boasts a rich winning tradition.
The lineup performed as Alyssa Wigley, Lily Lengyl, and Emma Cuck swept the singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. The doubles teams of Ella Cohen-Grace Devine and Hannah LaCoe-Nicole Kranovich also earned wins in straight sets.
"I think it is totally different being a coach as opposed to a player," Croker said. "It's nice to be able to watch all of the matches and see what we are implementing in practice work for them. We try to learn two or three things in practice that we try to put into play, and I saw a lot of that in the doubles matches, so I am very happy about that."
In her first regular-season match, Wigley, last season's Times-Tribune Player of the Year, looked impressive.
She displayed a full arsenal of cross-court winners, carefully placed drop shots, and her signature power serve to start with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Celia Emiliani.
Wigley is coming off a sophomore season that saw her post a record of 22-1, with her only loss coming against Wyoming Seminary's Ilana Rosenthal, who won the PIAA Class 2A championship. She improved her career record to 38-2.
"The start of the season is always amazing," Wigley said. "I love getting back into the atmosphere of having everyone here. We have our new lineup set, and I think everyone played amazing. Our doubles did a great job. We had fun, and we all played very well, and it was a great first day."
Elsewhere, Abington Heights defeated Scranton, 5-0.
Abington Heights' Susan Arp defeated Scranton's Maia Philbin, 6-2, 7-6 (3) in a matchup between two All-Region players from last year at No. 1 singles.
Montrose earned its first win of the season. Freshman Cara Evans, Paley Adams and Jessica Carey earned wins in straight sets.
Evans was a love-set winner in a 4-1 nonleague loss at Towanda on Tuesday.
Valley View posted a 4-1 win at North Pocono as Sarah Sweeney and Ella Swingle notched wins at No. 2 and 3 singles to pave the way for the Cougars.
At Penn State Scranton, Olivia Brzozowski, Abby Mackey and Lismarie Mercado breezed to singles victories as Mid Valley topped Riverside, 4-1.
