Texans QB Davis Mills to start over Tyrod Taylor for rest of the season

Throughout the season, and even before, the Houston Texans have had plenty of issues at quarterback.

On Friday, coach David Culley opted to make one decision to take them through the rest of the season.

Davis Mills will replace Tyrod Taylor and lead the Texans against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday and for their four remaining games.

“I felt like [Mills] gives us the best chance to win,” Culley said, via ESPN.

Mills has thrown for 1,406 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games this season. The Texans selected the rookie from Stanford with the No. 67 overall pick in the draft, and they first started him in Week 3 after Taylor was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Though it hasn’t been great for Mills in a lot of measures — he posted a 0.8 QBR in a blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills in October, which was the worst QBR recorded in the past three seasons — and he’s yet to lead the Texans to a win, he’s had a few solid outings.

Mills threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns in a narrow loss to the New England Patriots in October, and he threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Halloween.

But Taylor hasn’t been much better. He’s thrown five interceptions in four games since returning from injured reserve and was benched in the third quarter of the Texans' loss to the Colts on Sunday. He’s thrown for just 966 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions in six games.

“You’ve seen the last three ballgames we’ve played,” Culley said, via ESPN. “It has nothing to do with Tyrod not being ready to play or anything. We just feel like [Mills is] the best thing that gives us the chance to win.”

Taylor — who signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal with Houston — apparently didn’t take the news well, either.

"He didn't like the decision," Culley said, via ESPN. "I wouldn't have liked it either, but this is a production business. At offense, it always starts at the position. We needed a spark. We needed a change. We made the change."

The Texans will head into Sunday's game with a 2-10 record, tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the second-worst record in the NFL. They are listed as 8.5-point underdogs against the Seahawks at BetMGM.
