Hotel prices for Super Bowl 2023 in Arizona are sky high. Here are tips for hopeful fans.

It's still unknown which teams will make it to Super Bowl 2023, but it may be fair to say metro Phoenix hotels and resorts have already won the big game.

Hotels were sold out as early as last summer for the days leading up to Super Bowl 576 and on the game weekend of Feb. 10-12, according to a check of hotel reservation websites. It's impossible to find vacancies at the hotels closest to the game venue, State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Other parts of metro Phoenix have few to no hotel vacancies as well. Scottsdale, Arizona, in particular, is in high demand because the Super Bowl coincides with the WM Phoenix Open golf tournament, scheduled for Feb. 6-12 at TPC Scottsdale.

Interest in metro Phoenix hotels for Super Bowl 2023 is so strong that even hotels that haven't opened yet are sold out. Two north Scottsdale hotels, a Hilton opening Dec. 16 and a Home2 Suites opening Jan. 15, are accepting reservations now. Both hotels' websites showed they're sold out for Super Bowl weekend.

How much are Super Bowl 2023 hotel prices?

Travelers looking for at least a two- or three-star hotel for Super Bowl 2023 should expect to pay at least $400-$600 a night. The longer they wait, the more they're likely to pay as supply runs out.

Some brands show little inventory left in the region for Super Bowl weekend.

A recent search on the reservation websites of hotel chains with a large presence in Arizona showed the following prices and availability for Feb. 10-13, as of Dec. 6:

  • Hilton had rooms available at four hotels under its Hilton, Hampton Inn and Curio Collection brands and two vacation clubs under its Hilton Grand Vacations brand. The lowest rate was $900 per night with a Hilton Honors discount at the Hampton Inn Carefree.

  • Marriott International had rooms available at seven hotels and one vacation club resort. The lowest rate was $665 per night at the Moxy Phoenix Tempe.

  • Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, whose brands include Ramada, La Quinta and Days Inn, showed 11 available hotels in metro Phoenix including a Baymont hotel off Interstate 10 near 51st Avenue about 11 miles from State Farm Stadium, advertising a nightly rate of $949. Its Days Inn hotel in north Phoenix and Wingate hotel in Chandler were offering nightly rates below $400.

  • Choice Hotels, whose brands include Comfort Inn and Suites, Sleep Inn, Ascend and Cambria, has 16 hotels with rooms available in metro Phoenix. A Comfort Inn off Interstate 10 near 51st Avenue is advertising $832 per night. Choice Hotels' lowest rates for the weekend are $566 per night at the Comfort Inn and Suites Surprise near Sun City West, about 12 miles from the stadium.

  • IHG Hotels and Resorts, whose brands include Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites, Crowne Plaza and Kimpton, showed two Holiday Inn Express hotels with vacancy: one in Old Town Scottsdale for $854 per night and one in Peoria, about 10 miles from State Farm Stadium, for $1,488 per night.

Will more hotel rooms become available for Super Bowl 2023?

It's possible that fans who want to come to Arizona for the big game will be able to find a room as the playoff picture becomes more clear.

People who have already booked stays may cancel if their team doesn't make it to the Super Bowl, said Steve Eberhart, general manager of the Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa, one of the hotels closest to State Farm Stadium.

"We hope to have some rooms available to accommodate some of these fans as well," he said.

Can I save money by booking my Super Bowl hotel with points?

It depends. Travelers who have hotel loyalty points may be able to save money on a room by using them. But the selection of rooms available for points may be limited.

For example, as of Dec. 6, a stay in a two-queen-bed room at the Hampton Inn Carefree from Feb. 10-13 was $918 per night at the standard nonrefundable rate, for a total of $3,133.81 including taxes.

Alternatively, the room can be booked with Hilton Honors points for 60,000 per night. Under Hilton Honors' current pricing structure, you can buy as many as 1,000 points for $10, or 80,000 points for $800. If you can buy enough points to bring your account up to 180,000 points, you could stay at the hotel at a cost of $1,800.

However, many rooms that could have been booked with points have since sold out.

One room The Arizona Republic priced in November, a studio with one queen bed and one sofa bed at Residence Inn Phoenix Mesa, advertised $732 per night for a Feb. 10-13 stay, totaling $2,510 including taxes and fees. It was also available on those dates for 63,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, covering the entire stay, which could be purchased on Marriott's website for $812. The room is no longer available on Super Bowl weekend.

Is staying outside metro Phoenix for the Super Bowl an option?

Yes, and some Super Bowl travelers do that as a last resort.

Prescott, about 100 miles north of State Farm Stadium, and Tucson, about 128 miles southeast, are among the options. The top 10 Prescott hotels on TripAdvisor advertised rates between $114 and $196 per night for Feb. 10-13. For the top hotels in Tucson, that range was $196 to $521 per night that weekend.

Tucson's hotel and lodging industry benefited from a "compression" in the metro Phoenix market because of demand for rooms, said Cindy Aguilar, spokesperson for Visit Tucson.

"Once the game was announced and date set, availability at Phoenix metro and Scottsdale properties became limited and average rates increased accordingly," she said. "As a result, demand increased for other Arizona destinations, including Tucson."

Travelers who stay outside metro Phoenix should know that it can take several hours to get into the city when factoring in heavy traffic on Interstate 10, Interstate 17, and local roads leading to State Farm Stadium.
