Host Lady Tigers win battle of cats with Rushville

Feb. 2—LAWRENCEBURG — It might have been the sectional opening game jitters that had the Lawrenceburg offense out of sorts in the early going against Rushville. The Lady Lions held the Lady Tigers to six points in the first quarter and led 9-6.

Lawrenceburg got things going in the final 24 minutes, outscoring Rushville in each quarter en route to a 56-41 sectional victory.

The Lady Tigers improve to 14-10 on the season and advance to face Class 3A No. 5 Greensburg in the second semifinal Friday. Rushville ends the season at 7-18.

Rushville's Trisha Morgan hit a pair of free throws to open the first quarter. Kylee Herbert then got the shooter's roll on a 3-pointer to give Rushville a 5-0 lead. Lawrenceburg got on the board with a 3-pointer from Aubree Labazzo.

The Lady Lions extended the lead to 9-3 on a rebound bucket by Olivia Smith. Lawrenceburg closed the quarter with a lay-up by Labazzo and free throw from Brooklyn Craig. After one quarter, Rushville led 9-6.

Lawrenceburg went on a 7-2 run to open the second quarter. Leonie Boyer's two free throws were all for Rushville during the stretch. A floater by Lawrenceburg's Kamryn Ferreira had the Lady Tigers in front 13-11.

Rushville answered quickly with a pair of 3-pointers from Herbert. After a Labazzo bucket for Lawrenceburg, Rushville got back-to-back 3-pointers from Morgan and Herbert to lead 23-15. A 3-pointer from Ferreira started a 9-0 run to end the half, capped by a bucket in the lane by Natalie Knigga.

At the break, Lawrenceburg led 24-23.

The Lady Tigers looked more comfortable in the second half. Lawrenceburg opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run. Ferreira's 3-pointer started the spurt and Reagan Cecil's 3-pointer capped it to give Lawrenceburg a 35-25 advantage.

Herbert dialed long distance again for Rushville and connected to cut the deficit to seven, but Lawrenceburg closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to lead 40-30 heading to the fourth quarter.

Rushville's Boyer looked to get the Lady Lions going early in the fourth with a 3-pointer, but Lawrenceburg had the answer with a 3-pointer from Knigga.

After two free throws from Smith and a drive to the bucket by Boyer, the deficit was down to six at 43-37. Lawrenceburg put the game away with an 11-0 run, nine of those came from the free throw line. A Gracie Buzzard drive and Carly Senour bucket for Rushville sandwiched two free throws by Lawrenceburg's Lexie Elza to end the game with the Lady Tigers advancing 56-41.

Five 3-pointers by Herbert gave her top scoring honors with 15 points. Mogan finished with nine points. Boyer added seven points followed by Smith six, Buzzard two and Senour two.

Lawrenceburg got 14 from Labazzo and 12 each from Craig and Ferreira.
