A homeowner has asked for a postbox to be removed after building work on his property left it in the middle of his driveway.

The resident spent thousands of pounds widening the driveway to his home and installing a set of gates next to the 100-year-old postbox.

But the work has made the distinctive postbox stick out like a sore thumb and attracted criticism from local residents.

The red pillar has been sited on a newly-laid block paving at the corner of Oxford Road and School Road, Moseley, Birmingham.

Local councillors have received complaints about the work and are investigating whether it meets planning regulations.

The homeowner, who has declined to comment or be named, has now applied to Royal Mail to get the postbox relocated.

One angry neighbour, who also wished to remain anonymous, had branded the work “ridiculous.”

He said: “How on Earth he thought it was a good idea, I’ll never know. It looks absolutely ridiculous.

“A lot of people use that postbox so why should it be relocated just for one person? He hasn’t had the kerb dropped so I’m assuming he has not got permission for this.

“Surely he realised this was going to leave him with a massive postbox blocking his drive.

“I hope the council come down hard on him because it’s rather arrogant of him to just expect it be moved.”

A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said: “Alleged unauthorised works have recently been brought to our attention which are currently subject to an enforcement investigation.

“Discussions are taking place between council officers and the home owner in an attempt to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion.”
