Hockey Roundup: River Lakes Stars with an OT thriller over Willmar Cardinals

Jan. 9—WILLMAR — After both River Lakes and Willmar were stonewalled for three periods, a long-distance shot in overtime made the difference for the Stars.

In a Central Lakes Conference girls hockey contest, Aubree McDonagh netted the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win for River Lakes on Tuesday at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.

The win secures the regular-season sweep for the Stars. River Lakes beat Willmar 4-0 on Nov. 21, 2023 at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville.

Early in overtime, River Lakes won the faceoff in Willmar's zone. Bria Larson passed out to the blue line to defenseman Scout Swanstrom. Swanstrom made the pass over to McDonagh, who fired off a wrist shot that beat Cardinals goaltender Erin Eilers low for the game-winning goal 50 seconds into the extra period.

The Stars got the win despite being out-shot 39-23.

River Lakes goalie Kaydence Roeske made all 39 saves to get her fifth shutout of the season.

River Lakes plays Buffalo at 7 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo Civic Center. Willmar plays Sartell/Sauk Rapids at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids.

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato improved its record to 7-9-1 with the Wright County Conference victory at Hutchinson's Burich Arena.

Hutchinson is now 10-7-1.

Litchfield/D-C plays Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday at Thaler Hockey Arena in Mound.

River Lakes skated past Willmar in the Central Lakes Conference game at Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville.

The Stars are 6-5-2. Willmar falls to 3-9-1.

River Lakes plays host to Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at 7:15 p.m. Thursday back at Koronis Civic Arena. The Cardinals play host to Morris/Benson at 7:15 p.m. Monday at Willmar.
