Hockey roundup: Brainerd rolls past Willmar, 8-1

Jan. 4—WILLMAR — Brainerd wasted no time in establishing itself Thursday night.

The Warriors put up five first-period goals on the way to an 8-1 Central Lakes Conference boys hockey victory over Willmar at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.

Brady Johnson and Kade Stengrim both had two goals for Brainerd. Dylan Wikoff, Drew Haakonson, Braedon Manecke and Ryan Heinlen also scored for the Warriors.

The Cardinals' lone goal came on an unassisted tally from Evan Ims in the third period.

Willmar plays host to Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at 1:30 p.m. Saturday back at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.

Tied 3-3 in the third period, Morris/Benson Area scored three goals in the final six minutes to knock off the Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades at Lee Community Center in Morris.

Charlie Goff scored three goals for the Storm, including the game-winner on the power-play at 11:51 of the third period. Also scoring for Morris/Benson were Zach Wrobleski, Alex Claussen and Logan Hadfield. Hadfield added three assists.

Christopher Danielson had 17 saves in net for the Storm.

Morris/Benson hosts River Lakes at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Lee Community Center in Morris.

Willmar earned its third straight Central Lakes Conference victory with a win against Brainerd/Little Falls at Exchange Arena in Little Falls.

Sophia Quinn scored on the power-play. Lauren Eilers and Avery Quinn added empty net goals.

The Cardinals (3-3-0 in CLC, 11-3-0 overall) play host to Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Willmar.

Fergus Falls shut out the Stars at River Lakes Civic Arena in Richmond.

River Lakes (10-6-2) plays Willmar at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Willmar Civic Center Arena.
