History shows winner of Titans-Steelers is Super Bowl bound

When the Tennessee Titans meet the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Nissan Stadium, it will be the sixth time in the Super Bowl era that two unbeaten teams have squared off in Week 7 or later.

In the previous five matchups, the winner of each has advanced to the Super Bowl later that season. Here’s a look at the five previous matchups and what the results were (*denotes Super Bowl appearance):

Date

Matchup

Result

Oct. 28, 1973

Rams (6-0) at Vikings (6-0)

*Vikings 10-9

Oct. 24, 2004

Jets (5-0) at Patriots (5-0)

*Patriots 13-7

Oct. 14, 2007

Patriots (8-0) at Colts (7-0)

*Patriots 24-20

Nov. 1, 2015

Packers (6-0) at Broncos (6-0)

*Broncos 29-10

This certainly adds a little extra juice to this contest depending on how seriously you take this trend.

Of the five teams in this group to make the Super Bowl, two of them have gone on to win the big game: the Patriots in 2004 and the Broncos in 2015.

Three of the five winners listed above were the home team for their tilt with a fellow unbeaten team: the Vikings in 1973, the Patriots in 2004, and the Broncos in 2015.

This Titans-Steelers matchup, which was originally scheduled to take place in Week 4 but was postponed and rescheduled due to Tennessee’s COVID-19 outbreak, will kick off at noon CT on Sunday.
