Hiss retiring from USD 428

Jan. 10—Great Bend High School math teacher Tina Hiss and Riley Elementary School physical education teacher Bryan Scott will both retire at the end of the school year. Their retirements were announced as part of the personnel report approved at Monday's school board meeting.

Hiss was inducted into the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame for the class of 2014. She started her teaching career in 1977 at Hoisington High School, coming to Great Bend in 1979. In addition to high school math, she teaches a dual-credit algebra class with Barton Community College. In 2021, she was featured in the Great Bend Tribune's "Inspired Living" magazine.

The district is now looking for teachers to fill those positions in 2024-2025. Assistant Superintendent John Popp listed other vacancies: — Riley -sixth grade — Lincoln — fourth grade — Park — kindergarten — Little Panthers Preschool — preschool — GBMS — social studies, life skills, physical education — GBHS — English, science and AG/CTE (agriculture/career technical education). Also, Principal Tim Friess is retiring at the end of the school year. Applications for the GBHS principal position are being accepted until Jan. 15
