High schools: Tigers finish TCAL title with win at league tournament

Feb. 5—The Tokay High boys wrestling team completed a Tri-City Athletic League championship in Saturday, taking the league tournament after sweeping the dual season.

Lincoln placed second, and Tracy was third.

Tokay qualified a wrestler to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Tournament in all 14 weight classes. The top five in each division moves on, with sixth place as an alternate in case of injury.

The Tigers had individual championships in Shane Sanchez in the 167-pound division, Vince Marin at 177, Aiden Sweetman at 217, and runners up in Christian Morales at 115, Josiah Garcia at 122 and Jason Quinones at 159.

Davyd Cera placed third at 108, while fourth-place finishers were Michael Navas at 152 and Johnny Williams at heavyweight, and

fifth-place finishers were Alejandro Osorio at 128, Brevyn Bailey at 134, Jason Ramos at 140, Julian Napoles at 146 and Jason Evans at 192.

The Division I Tournament is Saturday at Folsom High.

The Lodi High boys were kept off the top of the podium, but the host team qualified a number of wrestlers through to D-I.

The Flames had two wrestlers place second, with Ethan Warmerdam in the 134-pound division, and Colin Grant in the 152-pound division.

Third-place finishes when to Dominic Zazzarino at 128, John Cloyne at 167, Drew Wood at 192 and Zach Kessler at 217, while Joaquin Yepez at 146, Grant Shipley at 159 and Victor Hernandez at 177 placed fourth. Drew Luiz placed fifth at 122, and Dominic Gauna placed sixth at 140. The TCAL sends five to the D-I tournament, but Lodi coach Keith Mettler said Gauna will compete as an alternate because one of the top five wound up injured.

The Lodi girls had three champions in Azaria Biegler at 122, Sarah Carpenter at 127 and Jayda VanSteenberge at 132. Emily Peters was second at 112, Jocelyn Shelley was second at 117, and Fiti Rosenbusch was third at 142. Up next is the Sac-Joaquin Section South Regionals on Friday and Saturday at Central Valley High in Ceres.

In the boys junior varsity tournament, Lodi had runners up in Gavin nation and Tony Ortiz, and third-place finishers in Henry Riggins, Ethan Wise and Brody Silveira.


Varsity boys: Lodi 70, Tracy 47

Giuseppe Guidi, Noah Rivera and Drew Tetz each scored 15 points in the Flames' victory on Friday, along with 10 from Sean Tetz, eight from Ryan Marini, three from Nathan Morse and two each from Mario Ruiz and Connor Overbo.

Lodi (16-10, 5-4 in the TCAL) will play at St. Mary's on Wednesday.

Varsity boys: St. Mary's 64, Tokay 54

The Tigers couldn't overcome a 16-4 deficit after the first quarter, and fell to 0-11 in TCAL play and 7-20 overall.

Tokay will finish the regular season on Friday with a game at Lodi. The JV game went to St. Mary's, 74-46.

Varsity girls: Liberty Ranch 60, El Dorado 40

The Hawks took sole possession of the top spot in the SVC with Friday's victory, sending the Cougars to their second loss in league play.

Sophia Felix and Haley Smith each scored 15 to lead the Hawks, with eight assists and seven rebounds from Smith, and eight rebounds from Felix. Madisyn Robbins added 12 points, Summer McCoy had 10 points and eight boards, Kendall Duryee had six points and six rebounds, and Alora Lopez had two points.

Liberty Ranch (22-5, 8-1 SVC) will finish the regular season at Rosemont today. The JV game went to El Dorado, 52-31.

Varsity girls: Rosemont 60, Galt 25

The Warriors dropped to 3-22 overall, and 2-7 in the SVC with Friday's loss. Akayla-Joy Gunter led Galt with 10 points, along with four from Emily Pena, three from Camila Gonzalez, and two each from Vanessa Felix Corrales, Mia Acuña, Carlotta Boldrini and Bricelena Cortez.

Galt will finish the regular season today at Union Mine. The JV game went to Galt, 34-20.

Varsity boys: Rosemont 84, Galt, 40

The Warriors dropped to 3-20 overall, and 0-9 in SVC play with Friday's loss. Galt will host Union Mine today to finish out the regular season.

Varsity boys: El Dorado 61, Liberty Ranch 51

The Hawks dropped to 9-18 overall and 2-7 in SVC play with Friday's loss.

Yousef Diab led the Hawks with 13 points, and added six rebounds, while Andrew Cadiz had 11 points, Elliott Hawker had eight points and seven boards, Derek Nelson had six points, Ryan Martin had five points and five boards, and Joseph Adams and Jimmy Lopez each scored four.

Liberty Ranch will finish out the regular season today with a home game against Rosemont.

JV boys: Lodi 68, Tracy 55

The JV Flames improved to 16-10 with Friday's win, and 4-6 in the TCAL, led by Xavier Davis with 14 points.

Eli Souza added 13 points and nine rebounds, Jonus Currington had 10 points, Jackson Buttler and Matt Biglieri scored eight each, Cooper Mettler had seven, and Noah Hufford and Max Tovar scored four points each.


Varsity boys: Lodi 2, West 2

The Flames and the Wolf Pack tied in the regular-season finale on Friday, to give Lodi a 4-14-4 overall record with a 1-5-4 mark in the TCAL.

The JV game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Varsity boys: Tokay 1, Lincoln 1

Tokay's boys ended the regular season with a tie, on a first-half goal from Jordan Hernandez.

Enrique Guillen finished with 10 saves as Tokay finished with a 7-10-6 record, and 3-4-3 in the TCAL.

Tokay won the JV game to finish 13-9-2 overall and 3-6-1 in the TCAL.
