High schools: Lake Weir High School hires Jason Roberts to lead football program

Jason Roberts has been hired as the Lake Weir High School football coach, succeeding Eoghan Cullen. Cullen departed Lake Weir after two seasons to become the coach at Forest High School.

Roberts, a veteran who grew up in Orlando, served 10 years in the military before embarking on his college education and coaching career.

Roberts has coaching stints with Clermont East Ridge, Tavares, Umatilla and Poinciana high schools as a position coach and defensive coordinator. Roberts served as the assistant head coach at Umatilla.

His coaching career began while still in college at the University of Central Florida, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise in coaching.

While a student at UCF, Roberts was welcomed by then-UCF head coach Scott Frost. Roberts credits much of his coaching acumen to that access and ability to learn from Frost.

The Lake Weir football program has been on Roberts’ radar for some time.

“Lake Weir is a school I have coached against and watched multiple times at off-season camps and 7-on-7 tournaments,” Roberts said. “Coaching against them, I have seen the talent and potential. We are excited to get to work and propel the Hurricanes to the next level.”

Roberts played his high school football at Orlando Boone. It was after serving in the Army that he decided to get into coaching because of his love of the game.

“Football is the ultimate team sport,” Roberts said. “It takes all 11 players on every single play.”

Roberts said he believes football is all about building better young men through the sport.

“Building relationships with the kids and helping them become better young men are the most important aspects of coaching,” Roberts said. “Football is the added bonus, something that the players and coaches all love together.”

Roberts made sure to thank his family and mentors for their roles in making this opportunity possible.

“I would like to thank my wife, Lynsie, and daughters, Emilia and Eliana, for their love and support throughout my coaching career,” Roberts said. “I am also thankful to Lake Weir High School and their administration for trusting me to lead the Hurricanes’ football program.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without past coaches and mentors and administrators for helping me to learn and their guidance.”

Roberts said he is excited to become a part of the LWHS family.

“I can’t express how excited I am to join and lead this football program,” Roberts said. “The community and their support are just as vital to our success as the coaches, administrators, and teachers are. Athletes need the support of not only their coaches but their community as well.

“The success of our football program depends on all of us.”
