High school wrestling: Creek wins first area duals title; Northwest, North Murray also qualify for state

Jan. 16—For the first time in school history, the Coahulla Creek High School wrestling team has won an area duals championship.

The Colts won the Area 6-3A dual championship to secure one of the area's two berths in the state duals tournament, which starts Friday.

The Colts faced LaFayette in the championship match on Friday in the tournament hosted by Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, defeating the Ramblers 40-36 to earn the area title and advance to the Class 3A state dual championship meet at Lumpkin County High School in Dahlonega starting Friday. LaFayette also advanced. Coahulla will face Long County in a first-round contest.

Also punching tickets to the state duals championships in their respective classifications were Northwest Whitfield, which will compete in the Class 4A championship at Chestatee High in Gainesville, and North Murray, which is bound for the 2A duals championship at Jeff Davis High in Hazlehurst.

In the Region 7-4A championship at Heritage High in Ringgold, Northwest defeated Southeast Whitfield 43-23 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. Northwest fell to Central-Carrollton, the defending state champion, but rallied to defeat Heritage 32-28 in the second-place match and earn a berth to the Class 4A duals championship. Northwest will face Luella in a first-round match.

North Murray took runner-up to Rockmart at the Area 7-2A duals championship held at Model High School in Rome. The Mountaineers beat Murray County to reach the finals. North Murray fell to Rockmart, which is the defending Class 2A champion, in the area finals, but rebounded to beat Model 46-36 in the second place match. The Mountaineers will go to the state duals championship for the second time in school history. North Murray will face Toombs County in a first-round contest on Friday.
