High school wrestling capsules for Feb. 24 sectional tournaments

Teams: Aurora, James Rhodes, Lakewood, North Canton Hoover, John Adams, John Hay, Brecksville, Mayfield, Normandy, Austintown Fitch

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the North Canton Hoover District

For the record: Brecksville is the head-and-shoulders favorite in the Fitch Sectional. The only area team is Mayfield. The Wildcats' best bets for a long tournament run are returning state-qualifier Sal Palmisano (23-9) and 132 and heavyweight Nico Traczyk (24-7). Frankie Palmisano (24-11) at 138 and Dwight Fritz (21-9) at 144 should get out to the North Canton District.

Euclid Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 10 a.m.

Where: Euclid

Teams: Walsh Jesuit, Brunswick, Mentor, North, Maple Heights, Riverside, Hudson, Valley Forge, Euclid

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the North Canton Hoover District

For the record: This is a pretty strong tournament by sectional standards, with fifth-seeded Mentor, 12th-seeded Brunswick and 13th-seeded Walsh all fielding formidable teams with expectations to get a lot of wrestlers to the district level. Mentor's low-to-midweight hammers of Diego Stropko, Jack DeBoe, Nick Blackburn and Antonio Shelley all have state podium aspirations —and it starts here. Liam Lloyd at 165 and Ben McWilliams at 190 are also good bets. Riverside should get a handful out to Hoover, too, especially David Rocha (36-5) at 120 and Antonio Bottiggi (39-1) as the state's third-ranked heavyweight in Division I.

Wadsworth Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 10 a.m.

Where: Wadsworth, 625 Broad St., Wadsworth

Teams: Akron Garfield, Wooster, Massillon Jackson, Solon, Stow, Avon, Brush, Nordonia, Wadsworth, South

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the North Canton Hoover District

For the record: Wadsworth should come home with the team title here, though Nordonia will send a lot of wrestlers to North Canton next week as well. Brush and South are the only area team competing at the Wadsworth sectional. Cooper Fiebig (22-13) at 157 and Cash McLendon (15-11) at 175 have led the Rebels this year, though Nick Ward (9-2) at 106 has come on as of late.

St. Edward Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 9:30 a.m.

Where: St. Edward, 13500 Detroit Ave., Lakewood

Teams: Boardman, Chardon, Olmsted Falls, Barberton, Uniontown Lake, Lorain, St. Ignatius, Cleveland Heights, North Olmsted, St. Edward

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Perrysburg District

For the record: St. Edward will dominate this sectional and will probably send all 14 of their wrestlers to the Perrysburg District next week. Chardon is the only area entry here. The Western Reserve Conference champions will advance a good number to the Perrysburg District, including returning state-qualifier Will Vucetic (36-5) at 175. Keep an eye on Chardon's middle weights — Caden Voley (36-8) at 144, Dylan Kick (29-15) at 150 and Alex Ash (30-7) at 157. The Hilltoppers' mid-weights have been hammers all year.

Division II

Akron SVSM Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 9 a.m.

Where: Akron SVSM, 15 N. Maple St., Akron

Teams: West Geauga, Benedictine, Streetsboro, Geneva, Harvey, Akron Springfield, Jefferson, Ravenna, Akron Buchtel, Youngstown Chaney, Hawken, Akron East, Akron SVSM

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Kenston District

For the record: The host Irish will be the favorite here. The area is well-represented in West G, Benedictine, Geneva, Harvey and Hawken. ... The Wolverines stand a good chance of advancing most of their lineup. Brian Denamen (39-6) at 157 was a state-qualifier a year ago. Ethan Bartlett (35-3) at 150, Zander Joltin (38-4) at 126, Caden Kaleal (37-2) and Blake Welker (35-12) at 215 all have more than 35 wins. Harvey heavyweight Marvin Guerra is one of the most underrated heavyweights around. Hawken's Will Greenberg is also in that weight class and could open some eyes this month. Geneva's Kenny Pavlisin (215) is the Eagles' best bet.

Kenston Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 10 a.m.

Where: Kenston

Teams: Louisville, Padua, Hubbard, Bay, Peninsula Woodridge, Edgewood, Brookside, Bedford, Rocky River, Lutheran West, NDCL, University, Kent Roosevelt, Kenston

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Kenston District

For the record: Louisville and Padua should duke it out for the team title at Kenston, which also hosts the D2 district a week later. The host Bombers have a powerful heavyweight in Sean Doyle (28-7) who hopes to podium at state before heading off to a college football career at Carnegie Mellon. NDCL's Bryce Wheatley (39-6) has dropped from heavyweight to 215, so that should better his chances to get on the podium for the second straight year. University freshman Doyle Grosz, son of head coach Sean Grosz, doesn't wrestle like the ninth-grader that he is. He enters with a well-tested 33-9 record.

Canal Fulton Northwest Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 9 a.m.

Where: Northwest High School, 8580 Erie Ave. NW, Canal Fulton

Teams: Medina Buckeye, Canton South, Canfield, Richfield Revere, CVCA, Norton, Poland, Shaw, Coventry, Copley, Warrensville Heights, Akron Hoban, VASJ

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Kenston District

For the record: Medina Buckeye will dominate this sectional and likely get its entire lineup to the Kenston District. VASJ is the only area entry here, with Mekhi Davenport (19-8) at 120 leading the way.

West Branch Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 9 a.m.

Where: West Branch, 14277 St. Main St., Beloit

Teams: Marlington, Madison, Salem, Alliance, Cloverleaf, Howland, Girard, Mogadore Field, Firelands, Orange, Garrett Morgan, Tallmadge, Holy Name

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Kenston District

For the record: This is a rather stacked sectional, with second-seeded Marlington, third-seeded Madison, and sixth-seeded Salem all vying for the team title. Coach Andrew Tomaso's team is the only area entry here, and the Blue Streaks should be well-represented at the Kenston District. There is plenty of depth and experience on the Madison roster, including Jack Harrison (34-10) at 132, Addison Trisket (22-6) at 144, Sonny Salajcik (26-11) at 150, Izaiah Siler (25-10) at 157 and Noah Blough (32-6) at 165. Most of the Blue Streaks should be at Kenston next week.

Division III

Beachwood Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 10 a.m.

Where: Beachwood

Teams: Beachwood, Oberlin, Rittman, Chagrin Falls, Independence, Cuyahoga Heights, Akron Manchester, Mogadore, Black River, Columbia, Lake Catholic, Trinity, St. John, Columbiana, Cleveland Central Catholic

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Independence District

For the record: Trinity, who had a phenomenal CVC tournament, continues its ascension in this sectional as the tournament favorite. But Lake Catholic and Columbia will advance many to Independence as well. Lake has hammers in returning state-placers Parker Pikor (31-3) at 120 and Joey Romano (37-4) at 132. But the underclassmen on the roster who will open a lot of eyes the next few weeks are expected to be Chance Wuhr (23-12) at 106, Tommy Slack (26-9) at 113) and Danny Zmorowski (31-6) at 215. Beachwood's Caleb Greenwood (36-4) at 150 is having a tremdendous season. The upswing Chagrin Falls program will be led this weekend by Harrison Fritz (33-7) at 144, Hunter Blair (26-12) at 132 and Jay McGinnis (25-9) at 126.

Berkshire Sectional

When: Feb. 24, 9 a.m.

Where: Berkshire

Teams: Berkshire, Cardinal, Kirtland, Grand Valley, Brookfield, Wellington, Conneaut, Fairview, Liberty, Pymatuning Valley, Ravenna Southeast, South Range, New Middletown Springfield, Fairless, Garrettsville, Perry

On deck: Top four in each weight class advance to the Independence District

For the record: A large share of the area's Division III wrestlers are in this sectional. Perry, who participated in the state duals a few weeks ago, is the favorite for the team title with its depth and talent. Senior Riley Rowan (35-7) at 126 is a favorite not only this weekend, but also weeks down the road to get a high spot on the podium. The young guys down low — Cooper Schlauch (19-9) at 106, Landon Rusnak (25-11) at 113 and Anthony Trentanelli (27-12) at 120 — have been improving virtually by the minute. Most of Perry's roster is a good bet to advance. Berkshire has a handful of strong contenders here, too, including returning state-qualifier Colin Hering (24-8) at 113. Alex Munn (13-2) at 138 is healthy, which is a major plus, and Caden Klingman (27-13) at 126 has put together a fine year so far.
