HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: Central, Model standouts take titles

Mar. 25—Standouts from Madison County claimed championships on Saturday at the Madison Central Invitational, which was held at EKU's Greg Adams Tennis Center.

Central's Jacey Wilson won the girls singles title, while Model's David Tofan took the boys singles title.

Model's Kate Conley and Lily Meade were the girls doubles champions, beating out teammates Claire Ballou and Kate Arvin to the title.

Model's Colin Lair and Keshav Bhandari fell in the boys doubles title match, falling to Chandler/Colon of Dunbar, 6-2, 6-2.

In the girls team standings, Model edged out Central for first place. Dunbar was third and Frederick Douglass took fourth.

In the boys team, Model and Dunbar finished with the same number of total points and shared the title. Central was third and Douglass was fourth.

Wilson didn't drop a set on the way to the title. The senior beat Model's Maiya Bhandari in the first round, 8-3, then defeated a freshman from Dunbar, 8-0.

In the title match, Wilson defeated Model's Serena Florell, 6-2, 6-1.

Tofan rolled through his first match, then defeated Brayden Stamm of Madison Central, 8-3. The eighth-grader, however, lost the first set to Will Eisele of Dunbar in the finals.

Tofan battled back to win the second set in a tiebreaker, then won a third-set tiebreaker — 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5.

Conley and Meade beat Central's Emily Barney and Abi Beall in the opening round, 8-4, then picked up a win over a team from Dunbar, 8-5.

Ballou and Arvin got a bye in the first round, then beat Madison Central's Katie Shaffer and Bethany Burns, in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Conley and Meade earned an 9-7 win.

Lair and Bhandari beat a team from Douglass in the opening round, 8-2, then topped Park/Dang of Dunbar, 8-4.

They weren't, however, able to beat Dunbar's other doubles team in the title match.

The Central tennis team is set to return to action Tuesday at home against Lexington Christian.

Model is set to return to action Monday at Lafayette.
