High School Sports Talk Presented by VirginiaPreps.com airs each and every Saturday from 10 AM EST to Noon on ESPN Radio 94.1, hosted by Matthew Hatfield and Coach Ed Young.
To start off the first show for October 2017, the guys went through the scoreboard of action from Thursday and Friday's football results around Hampton Roads.
The one and only Keith from Smithfield called in for the second segment of the show, giving out his winning picks for next week's games. That was followed by a playback interview at the 28:45 mark with Granby Head Football Coach Sekou Wilson, whose Comets beat Lake Taylor 14-12 to snap their 45-game Eastern District winning streak. It was Granby's first win over the Titans since 2004 as they moved to 4-2 overall on the season.
At the 36 minute mark of the show, former Major League Baseball pitcher Wayne Gomes stopped by to talk about an upcoming event as well as chime in on what is happening in the big leagues with the playoffs underway. A Hampton native who is also in the ODU Sports Hall of Fame, Gomes will be hosting an informational meeting as part of Youth Futures International at Virginia Baseball Academy.
Wayne and YFI will be taking a group of athletes ages 13-18 to Cuba for a once in a lifetime experience in February.
Around the 52 minute mark of the show, Smithfield quarterback and defensive back Willie Drew joined the guys to discuss his recent college commitment to James Madison University (see more in the story here). Drew ran for 233 yards and three touchdowns, plus passed for 137 yards and another score in Smithfield's 34-7 victory over Warhill.
