High school highlights for Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024


—Century used stifling defense and saw three finish in double figures in a 56-37 win over crosstown rival Mayo. Shaun Wysocki led the way with a game-high 14 points, while Jake Wills tallied 11 and Markes Simpson added 10 for the Panthers. Sawyer Markham knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points to pace the Spartans.


—Tegan Malone scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Stewartville sprinted past Holmen (Wis.) 71-44 at the Midwest Player's Classic in La Crosse.


—Ciara Seifert scored 16 points. Jacey Nelson 13, Jazmin Daing 10 and Kiera Derr, Brynn Clarey and Nyabol Mourwal all had eight apiece in John Marshall's 67-45 win over Faribault.


—Lauren Hust scored a game-high 22 points as Lourdes had little trouble in a 62-39 win over Fairmont in a game played at the Target Center.


—Abby Williams made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points and Clarissa Sauer had 22 points in Winona Cotter's 74-68 win over No. 5-ranked Hayfield. Natalie Beaver had 21 points for Hayfield.

—Kendra Harvey scored 22 points and buried four 3-pointers in Byron's 70-67 win over New Ulm. The No. 9-ranked Bears (Class 3A) also got 15 points from Kayla Stork and 12 from Madison Ohm. Byron is 11-2, New Ulm 11-3.


—Kyle Lappi recorded a 16-save shutout as Century/John Marshall defeated Mayo 5-0 in the first meeting between the rivals since the Century/JM co-op was formed. Calvin O'Reilly scored the game-winning goal and added one assist. Brock Clarey had a goal and two assists in the win. Mikah Nelson made 30 saves for Mayo.


—Peyton Loeslie scored the lone goal for Lourdes in a 4-1 loss at Two Rivers. The Eagles hung in the game through two-plus periods thanks to 24 saves from Xander Carter-Kleven.

—Megan Gamble and Katie Nelson each had two point nights, while Isabella Scranton made 20 stops as Century/John Marshall shut out Winona 3-0. Gamble scored and an assist, while Nelson dished out a pair of assists. Aliya Gricius made 38 saves for Winona.


—Mayo finished second in the Section 1, Class 2A True Team meet at Century. The Spartans scored 1,053 points. Century was third with 857, while Lakeville South won the meet with a 1,113.5 total. Century got a standout meet from Owen Kelly. The junior won the 50 freestyle in 22.23 seconds. He also swam legs on Century's second-place 200 medley relay team (Joe Veterby, Grady Bargfrede, William Truskowski, Kelly) and Century's second-place 400 freestyle relay team (Eli Holmes, Grady Bargfrede, Nate Kram, Kelly). Mayo got second-place swims from William Leasure (100 freestyle, 50.82) and Logan Atkinson (100 backstroke, 56.71). Century got second-place individual finishes from Bargfede in the 200 individual medley (2:00.70) and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.61).
