High school basketball roundup: Northwest girls, boys open region play with wins over Cedartown; Murray, North Murray, Creek all sweep

Jan. 5—Boys Northwest Whitfield 54, Cedartown 44

Northwest Whitfield (10-3) opened Region 7-4A action with a 54-44 home win over Cedartown (7-6) Friday night.

KenKen Douglas led the Bruins with 12 points. Isaiah Foster added 10, as did Hudson Gray. Tytus Ramsey scored seeven.

Northwest plays at Murray County today at 4:30 p.m.

Christian Heritage 59, Chattanooga Prep 52

The Lions (13-2) survived a late rally by Chattanooga Prep (7-4) to take a 59-52 Friday home victory.

Christian Heritage led 14-8 after one quarter, 27-15 at halftime and 44-31 after three quarters. The lead was cut to two late in the fourth, but the Lions hit late free throws to take the victory.

Jax Abernathy scored 25 points, while Dontae Crowder and Isaac Plavich both scored 10.

Christian Heritage plays Bowdon Tuesday night at 7:30 for the Lions' first Region 7-A DII game.

Coahulla Creek 66, Gordon Lee 49

Coahulla Creek (10-4) stayed unbeaten in Region 6-3A play with a 66-49 home win over Gordon Lee (2-9) Friday.

Creek led 18-13 after the first and 32-21 at halftime, then opened up a 20-point lead in the third before settling for a 48-33 advantage at the end of the frame.

Carter Quarles led the Colts with 20 points. Chase Ward scored 18 points, and Gage Voyles scored 14.

The Colts play at Unity Christian today at 6 p.m.

Berean Academy 59, Dalton Academy 41

Dalton Academy (2-9) was tied with undefeated Berean Academy (8-0) through a quarter in Hixson, Tennessee, on Friday, but the home team pulled away from there for a 59-41 win.

It was tied 15-15 after a quarter, but Berean pulled out to a 32-21 lead at half and a 49-31 lead after three quarters.

Dalton Academy plays Grace Baptist on the road today.

Murray County 66, Haralson County 46

Murray County (9-4) scored a home Region 7-2A win Friday night when the Indians downed Haralson County (5-8) 66-46.

Parker Hawkins led Murray with 22 points, while Braxton Vineyard had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Joseph Garland had 12.

The Indians host Northwest Whitfield today at 4:30 p.m.

North Murray 83, Gordon Central 57

North Murray (13-1) blasted past Gordon Central (9-6) 83-57 at home Friday night.

The Neers led 44-21 half and 63-36 after three quarters.

JD Ellis hit four 3-pointers and led the way for North Murray with 20 points. Judson Petty scored 14, and Cayce Robinette had a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 11. Luke Layne scored nine.

North Murray hit 12 3-pointers overall.

The Mountaineers host Southeast Whitfield today at 4:30.

Girls

Northwest Whitfield 64, Cedartown 23

Northwest Whitfield (8-3) opened Region 7-4A play with a 64-23 home rout over Cedartown (4-7) Friday.

Miah Triana scored 13 points to lead the Lady Bruins. Kennedy Baker scored 12, while Lindsey Harris put in 11. Harris and Sloan Pender each hit a trio of 3-pointers. Pender scored nine. Lexi Lyon and Beckley Manning both scored eight.

Northwest plays at Murray County today at 3 p.m.

Coahulla Creek 50, Gordon Lee 29

Coahulla Creek (8-5) ended a three-game losing skid with a 50-29 home win over Region 6-3A opponent Gordon Lee (3-11) Friday night.

The Lady Colts led 16-8 after the first quarter, hung on to a 25-16 lead at half and had a 42-25 advantage after three quarters.

Caroline Reed led the Lady Colts with 14 points.

Creek plays at Unity Christian today at 4:30.

Berean Academy 44, Dalton Academy 26

Dalton Academy (1-9) trailed just 17-15 at halftime against Berean Academy (1-3) in Hixson, Tennessee, on Friday, but Berean pulled away for a 44-26 win.

The two-point halftime lead grew to 33-19 after three as the Lady Pumas were outscored 15-4 in the period.

TDA plays against Grace Baptist today at 3 p.m.

Sonoraville 53, Southeast Whitfield 21

Southeast Whitfield (5-8) was defeated 53-21 Friday at Sonoraville (5-11)

The loss came off a 43-40 win for Southeast over Gordon Central on Tuesday. In that game, Johanna Ortiz had 17 points and Trinity Burse scored 13.

Southeast plays North Murray today at 3 p.m.

Murray County 71, Haralson County 16

Murray County (10-4) ripped Haralson County (3-9) for a 71-16 home victory Friday night.

Murray's Emma Blaylock matched Haralson by herself, scoring 16. Miley McClure scored 15, while Bayleigh Winkler scored 12.

The Lady Indians step back out of Region 7-2A play today with a home game against Northwest Whitfield at 3 p.m.

North Murray 56, Gordon Central 29

North Murray (9-5) shut down Gordon Central (4-11) 56-29 for a Region 7-2A home victory Friday night.

28-16 was the North Murray lead at half, and the Lady Mountaineers led 43-29 after three.

North Murray plays on the road against Southeast today at 3 p.m.
