High school basketball roundup: Northwest boys avenge loss to Murray, but Lady Indians win; North Murray sweeps Southeast, and Dalton Academy boys win

Jan. 8—Boys Northwest Whitfield 48, Murray County 44

Northwest Whitfield (11-3) avenged a home defeat earlier this season by Murray County (9-5) when the Bruins knocked off the Indians 48-44 on Murray's floor Saturday.

The Bruins held on for a win after a tight game throughout the evening. Murray led 13-12 after one, Northwest had a 27-23 lead at halftime, and the Bruins led 38-35 entering the fourth.

Dakota Blackwell led Northwest with 11 points, while Jackson Harris and Hudson Gray each had 10.

Murray fell despite Braxton Vineyard scoring more than half the Indians' points at 26 and leading the team in rebounds with 10. Parker Hawkins had eight points and five rebounds.

Northwest plays at Region 7-4A rival Southeast Whitfield tonight at 7:30, while Murray County is at Region 7-2A foe Fannin County at the same time.

Coahulla Creek 75, Unity Christian 62

Coahulla Creek (11-4) knocked off Unity Christian (6-8) 75-62 in Rome on Saturday.

Chase Ward poured in 29 points to lead the Colts, while Gage Voyles scored 18 and Carter Quarles had 11.

Creek gets back to Region 6-3A action tonight when the Colts travel to play Ridgeland at 7:30.

Dalton Academy 64, Grace Baptist Academy 54

Dalton Academy (3-9) picked up its third win of the season Saturday when the Pumas knocked off Grace Baptist Academy (2-10) 64-54 in Chattanooga.

The win sets another new high mark for wins in a season by the young program. After going winless in the program's first season of play in 2021-22, the Pumas won one game last year. TDA is up to three now.

The Pumas get another shot at a team that they've already beaten this season tonight. The Pumas host Oakwood Christian at 7:30.

North Murray 77, Southeast Whitfield 35

North Murray (14-1) scorched Southeast Whitfield (2-13) 77-35 in Dalton Saturday.

North Murray led 24-12 after a quarter and 41-25 at half. Southeast scored just 10 points in the second half, allowing the Mountaineers to climb away further.

J.D. Ellis hit four 3-pointers and led North Murray with 18 points. Judson Petty scored 13, and Cayce Robinette had eight.

Skyler Pulliam scored 16 points to lead Southeast. Ethan Hampton scored eight.

North Murray will host Rockmart tonight at 7:30. Southeast plays host to Northwest Whitfield tonight, also at 7:30.


Murray County 60, Northwest Whitfield 48

Murray County (11-4) knocked off Northwest Whitfield (8-4) for the second time this season, defeating the Lady Bruins 60-48 in Chatsworth on Saturday.

Northwest started hot and led 19-12 after a quarter, but the Lady Bruins were held to just four points in the second quarter as Murray surged to a 25-23 halftime lead. The Lady Indians pulled away in the third and fourth for the 12-point win.

Callan Ledford led Murray with 16 points and hit two 3-pointers. Miley McClure scored 14, while Skyler Mahoney and Bayleigh Winkler both put in 12.

Kennedy Baker led the way for Northwest with 13, while Lindsey Harris scored 11 and Lexi Lyon had 10.

Murray travels to Fannin County tonight at 6, while Northwest will be at Southeast Whitfield tonight at 6.

Coahulla Creek 70, Unity Christian 34

After a three-game slide, Coahulla Creek (9-5) has won two in a row.

The Lady Colts more than doubled the score of Unity Christian (5-5) in a 70-34 win in Rome Saturday.

Five different Lady Colts scored in double digits. Annie Reed scored 12, while Lilah Brooker, Karis Hurt and Caroline Reed all scored 11. Aubree Langley put in 10.

Creek plays at Ridgeland tonight at 6.

Grace Baptist Academy 53, Dalton Academy 31

Dalton Academy (1-11) dropped 53-31 to Grace Baptist Academy (2-2) in Chattanooga on Saturday.

The Lady Pumas host Oakwood Christian tonight at 6.

North Murray 43, Southeast Whitfield 30

North Murray (10-5) got to 10 wins on the season with a 43-30 win over Southeast Whitfield (5-9) in Dalton.

Southeast led North Murray 9-7 after one quarter, but the Lady Mountaineers used a 10-3 second quarter to take a lead, then held a 26-24 advantage after three quarters. North Murray pulled away afterward.

Southeast hosts rival Northwest Whitfield tonight at 6, while North Murray hosts Rockmart at the same time.
