Here's Why ‘Locke & Key’ Won’t Be Returning for Season 4 on Netflix
The third season of Locke & Key dropped on Netflix just a few days ago, and you better believe we canceled all our plans to stay in and watch. However, following a production delay caused by the pandemic and the announcement of a double renewal for seasons 2 and 3, fans everywhere (hi, me included!) couldn't help but remain curious about the ultimate fate of the show. Sadly, we now know that there will not be a season 4 of Locke & Key (which TBH we should have known after Netflix's announcement just a few months ago. But alas! It wouldn't be the first time I missed a red flag ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
On April 6, the streamer took to Instagram to share that season 3 of the beloved show will be the last. Alongside a series of stills from the latest installment was a caption that read: "YOUR FIRST LOOK at the 3rd and final season of Locke & Key—coming later this year."
As upsetting as the news may be, a three-season run is pretty typical for the majority of Netflix shows, save for larger ones like Stranger Things and Money Heist—namely because its subscriber-based model doesn't always draw new viewers after a certain amount of time. However, there seem to be other reasons for the show's cancellation. *cue dramatic music*
At the time of the non-renewal announcement, showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill released a statement that read: "Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion. As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We're keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use."
Sadly, this means that not all of the stories from the original Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez comic book series will be realized, since there are *whips out calculator* six different "series arcs" across its five-year, 37-issue original run.
But it seems that the cast is already looking ahead. Case in point? Emilia Jones received a BAFTA nomination earlier this year for CODA, which also took home Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars. Carlton, for his part, is currently an executive producer on the upcoming Apple TV+ show Five Days at the Memorial and a new TV version of the cult classic novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. *Le sigh* I guess it's time for us to move on, too...but not without re-watching the series juuuust one more time lol.
