This won't be about gaudy stats or a long list of historic accomplishments. The case for the Redskins to retire Darrell Green or Sonny Jurgensen's numbers come full of Hall of Fame bona fides and numbers that make football historians blush.
The case for the Redskins to retire Doug Williams' number 17 comes from a different place entirely, and it's a place that's arguably never been more important.
Williams started only 14 regular season games in Washington, and didn't win that many of them. His record as a regular season starter in the Burgundy and Gold comes in at just 5-9.
But, again, that's not what matters.
What matters is Williams 3-0 record in the postseason, and most importantly, his 340 yards passing in Super Bowl XXII.
In that game, a 42-10 romp over Denver, Williams recovered from an early 10-0 deficit to put together one of the most explosive, prolific scoring binges ever seen in NFL postseason history. Williams dropped four touchdown passes in the second quarter and what looked like a tight contest got blown wide open.
In doing so, Williams erased years and years and years of racist misconceptions about black quarterbacks being unable to play the position at the highest level. For decades, black quarterbacks got asked to switch positions to make it in pro football, and after Williams' Super Bowl performance, many players got new and better opportunities to play QB in high school, college and in the NFL.
Williams got named MVP of Super Bowl XXII, the first black quarterback to ever take that honor. By doing so he helped tear down years and layers of racist foundations in football.
That deserves to be celebrated in the biggest way it can. That's why Williams should get his jersey retired.
Yes, the Redskins have other players that made it to the Hall of Fame. Yes, the Redskins have many other players with more impressive resumes.
But nobody else, ever, will do what Doug Williams did in a Redskins uniform. That type of posterity deserves the highest type of recognition.
