Hazen tiptoes past Trinity by one point, 43-42

Feb. 23—BEULAH — Trinity was toppled by a single digit on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024, courtesy of the Hazen Bison's 13-point third frame and a game-high 17 points from junior forward Macee Smith. The loss ends the Titans' season at 13-11 and sends Hazen to face South Prairie-Max in the state qualifier at Minot Auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The score at the end of the first quarter ended up at 12-10, with THS holding the very slim lead, and HHS managed to halve that deficit into a single point at the halftime break, 22-21. The Titans benefited from 5 points in the first quarter from senior guard Delaney Deschamp and 7 first-half points from senior guard Ava Jahner, while the Bison responded with 7 from Smith and 6 from freshman guard Lauren Doll. Meanwhile, junior forward Nevaeh Tormaschy netted a team-high 8 points in the first — on her way to 16 to lead the squad — and keep the Titans in the lead.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Tormaschy was again torrid for Trinity, scoring 8 more points in the second half, while sophomore guard Annabel Scheeler came alive for a 3-pointer and 11 of her double-digit total of 12.

Freshman phenom Macey Van Inwagen proved to be a huge difference-maker for Hazen, however, as she knocked down a pair of treys on her way to 8 second-half points and ended up with 10.

No other player for the Bison came close to double-digits, but Jahner came close and wound up with 9 for the Titans.
