The Atlanta Hawks announced Thursday that they'll be introducing a secondary logo at Game 6 against the Indiana Pacers at Philips Arena. Or, more appropriately, re-introducing it, since it's probably going to look fairly familiar to many of you:
That's right — the Hawks are bringing back the "red circle with a hawk's head inside it that actually looks more like Pac-Man eating a food pellet" logo that the team rocked from the 1972-73 season through the end of the 1994-95 campaign. (Roll over, Spud Webb. Tell Kevin Willis the news.)
Well, OK, you've got me — it's not exactly a straight turn-back-the-clock move. The Hawks have made a couple of alterations aimed at making Pac-Hawk 2.0 more fearsome, as detailed by Chris Creamer at SportsLogos.net:
That slight head-tilt, increased beak hook and angrier eye angle have got to be worth an extra couple of points a night. Who wants to argue with a bird of prey so intimidating, especially when it's being worn by the likes of Pero Antic?
Those who have grown fond of the red-and-blue, significant-wingspan hawk that has served as the team's primary logo since 2007 need not worry — that's not going away. They're just re-incorporating the Pac-Man look as a secondary logo, offering the new (and surprisingly successful) version of the Hawks an added bit of tether to the franchise's past successes.
Fans in attendance at the Highlight Factory for what could be a closeout Game 6 will all get a brand new red shirt featuring the rebooted supplemental logo:

... which is a pretty neat "thanks for coming" gift, even if it doesn't help you keep your pants free of unwanted fluff.
