Hawk Harrelson continues Wrigley Field hate: 'You couldn't pay me to go'
Chicago White Sox broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson hasn’t softened his stance on Wrigley Field. Just months after Harrelson went on a tirade against the historic site, he tripled down on his hatred.
While making an appearance at the Winter Meetings, Harrelson expressed his negative opinion of the park once again, according to CBS Chicago.
“ I told ya, I will never step foot in Wrigley Field again as long as I live,” Harrelson said. “You couldn’t pay me to go to Wrigley Field again.”
That echoes much of what Harrelson said about the park in August. It was around that time he revealed he would avoid the series at Wrigley Field while broadcasting next season. Harrelson is only doing about 20 games as he transitions into retirement, but he refuses to go to Wrigley when the Sox take on the Chicago Cubs in 2018.
That’s when Harrelson first said he would never go back to Wrigley. A week later, he added that the stadium should be replaced. His “couldn’t pay me” and “as long as I live” quotes are new … and the epitome of Hawk.
Despite all that, Harrelson doesn’t hate the Cubs. In that same article, he mentions running into Cubs owner Tom Ricketts, and telling him he’s looking forward to the Cubs and Sox playing each other in a few years. He says that all Chicago fans “are going to to have a wonderful next decade in baseball.” He respects how good the Cubs are right now.
If you’re willing to listen to Harrelson (we know, we know), you might understand part of his point. Wrigley is old, and many of its amenities are old as well. For a long time, their visitor’s locker room was derided by opposing players. You could probably say the same for other areas of the park … like the broadcast booths.
But that’s changing. Wrigley has undergone significant renovations over the past couple winters in an effort to upgrade nearly every aspect of the park. Maybe Harrelson is working with outdated views, is what we’re saying.
That should come as no surprise to anyone who has heard him call a game recently.
