Feb. 5—NEWBURGH — The Washington Hatchet wrestling team will be advancing two wrestlers to the Evansville Semi-state on Saturday at the Ford Center.
Brady Byrd continued his season-long success with a second-place finish, and Jackson Whitehead earned a fourth-place spot in the 144lb. class.
As a team, WHS was 11th out of 16 teams with 28 points, as Mater Dei took the top spot with 191.5 points and Heritage Hills was second with 135.
In Byrd's match at 106, he defeated Noah Putnam of Evansville North and Matteo Cirignano, before losing in a 4-2 decision to David Altstadt of Mater Dei. It was Byrd's first defeat of the year and he moves into semi-state with a 42-1 record.
At 144 lbs., Whitehead opened with a win over North Posey's Tyler Barrow, before falling to Deacon Dressler of Gibson Southern. Whitehead then lost to Zach Bulkley of MTV with an 8-4 decision.
Other Hatchet wrestlers who participated on Saturday included Holden McCarthy at 120, who lost to Mater Dei's Ty Henderson; Righley Purdue lost a 7-2 decision to EJ Rainey at 138; Oliver Roe at 165 lost by a technical fall to North's Matthew Pegram; Xavion Lesure at 175, lost to Mater Dei's Drew Shapaker; Diego Mora-Lopez lost MD's Caden Thacker at 190; Eli Jenne at 285 lost his first-round match to Brady Reeves of North.
Semi-state will be at the Ford Center in Evansville. Start time is 10 a.m. and there is a $12 admission fee.
Wrestlers must win their first two matches to advance to the State Finals.
