Hartshorne battles in final day of Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic

Dec. 30—ADA — The Lady Miners never quit, no matter what was thrown their way.

Hartshorne faced off against Byng Saturday in the final day of the 46th Annual Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic at East Central University, where the Lady Miners fought but fell 69-50.

The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but a Hartshorne timeout helped spark offense for the Lady Miners — with Brooky Surginer and Sophia Camp combining for six points to cut the deficit down to four.

Jayda Moore added a pair of threes, with Alexis Hoover adding a triple of her own. But Byng hit another scoring run to take a 22-15 lead after the opening quarter.

Surginer found Camp for two points to start the second quarter, and added a bucket of her own off a steal and score. Camp then nailed a baseline driving score, as Hartshorne chipped away at the deficit. Addison Bernardi and Moore hit back-to-back triples, powering the Lady Miners forward.

The Lady Pirates responded in kind, with Alona Cooper getting hot from beyond the arc. Byng rushed out with a 13-0 run to end the half and take a 45-27 lead into the locker room.

Surginer got Hartshorne going to start the second half, with Byng answering with a 5-0 run. But with a gritty determination, the Lady Miners started swinging back. Pyper Vinson and Surginer hit a pair of scores, followed by a Camp baseline jumper for two Moore points.

Defensive efforts from Hartshorne kept Byng scoreless during the run, and the Lady Miners ended the 9-0 spurt with points from Alanna Williams and Lexis Vicars to make it a 50-38 Byng lead after three quarters.

Cooper extended the lead for the Lady Pirates, but it didn't last long as a Vicars three-point play and back-to-back scores from Moore cut the lead down to single digits. Cooper sparked a 5-0 run for Byng in response, with Surginer answering with a triple of her own to cut the lead back to 12 with 3:28 to play and Hartshorne calling timeout.

On the other side, it'd be Byng finding another scoring run — using the opportunity to seal away the win.

Moore led the way for the Lady Miners with 13 points, followed by Surginer with 11 points, Camp with 10 points, Vicars with four points, Alexis Hoover and Bernardi with three points each, and Vinson, Alanna Williams, and Reanna Williams with two points each.

Surginer was named to the 2023 Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic All-Tournament Team.

Cooper finished with a game-high 42 points for the Lady Pirates.
