Harry Kane: West Ham victory highlights need to win away while Tottenham's Wembley woes continue

Harry Kane has emphasised the importance of Tottenham winning on the road while they adjust to playing at Wembley.

The Lilywhites have been unable to win any of their Premier League matches in front of their own fans this term, losing 2-1 to Chelsea and then being held to draws by both Burnley (1-1) and Swansea (0-0), who defended in numbers under the arch and succeeded in frustrating their hosts.

On the other hand, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been dominant and free-scoring outside north-west London, winning all three of their top-flight fixtures away from home and scoring eight goals in the process.

Having triumphed 2-0 at Newcastle and 3-0 at Everton, they went 3-0 up at West Ham on Saturday before being pegged back – partly due to Serge Aurier’s second-half dismissal – and eventually having to grind out a 3-2 win.

Asked if Spurs are finding more space on the counter-attack when they are the visiting team, Harry Kane – who scored the first two goals against the Hammers – said: “Yes, sometimes.

“We’re going to have to deal with that. When teams come to our place, whether it’s White Hart Lane or Wembley, they’re going to drop off and we’ve got to find a way to get around that and win.

“You could say it’s maybe a bit more open away and we take advantage of that, but we’ve still got to find a way to win at home as well.

“I feel we’ve been a bit unlucky in the last few games [at Wembley], but it’s important we continue this away form until that changes. Then, if we continue what we’re doing here [when we’re] at home, we should be right up there.

“We’re delighted with the win. We played very well, got 3-0 up and it was just a matter of seeing the game out.

“But goals change games, red cards change games and all of a sudden we were up against it. We did very well to grind it out and it’s a massive three points away from home.”

Kane has now scored six goals in four games, having netted twice against Everton, Borussia Dortmund and now West Ham this month.

He was close to completing his first treble of the season at the London Stadium but a free kick from the left side – a position where Christian Eriksen usually takes the set pieces – struck the far post seconds before Eriksen made it 3-0.

“Whenever you score two goals, especially in the first half, you’re always looking for the hat-trick,” said Kane. “There was the free kick that hit the post and another one hit the post too.

“We practice free kicks in training, especially the day before games. On Friday I was practising them and I felt really good.

“Even that one, it’s more of a crossing position but I kind of fancied it and was a bit unlucky. Christian managed to score from it in the end so he was happy.

“It’s something we practice and whoever feels ready in the game to take it, they’ll take it. Hopefully one of them goes in for me soon.”

Tottenham immediately turn their attention to the Champions League as they prepare to fly to Cyprus and take on Apoel Nicosia.

The Cypriot champions are the least-fancied team in Group H but Kane admits they are also something of an unknown quantity – certainly when compared to Real Madrid and Dortmund, who are much better known.

“It’s going to be a hostile atmosphere I’d imagine out there,” he said. “You don’t know what the pitch is like, you don’t know what the crowd are going to be like, so we’ve got to just adapt to that as soon as possible and hopefully win the game.

“Of course we’re confident, especially after the last result in the Champions League [when we beat Dortmund]. But there’s no easy game away from home in this competition.

“It’s going to be tough but we feel we can win the game. We’ve got to recover now, then it’s a quick turnaround and another massive game.

“If we can win that, we can’t worry too much about other results but we’ll be on six points and in a great position.”

Spurs are likely to be playing in temperatures around 23 degrees on Tuesday, but they experienced similar conditions during their pre-season tour of the USA, competing in matches in Florida, New Jersey and Tennessee in July.

“That’s why we do that sort of stuff as well,” said Kane. “Normally pre-season is in a hot climate to get used to that, and every little helps. We should be fit enough now to cope with that so we’ve just got to go out there and do it.”
