We can mark Jan. 9, 2021, as a memorable day in Buffalo Bills history.

On that date, the Bills won their first playoff game since 1995, topping the Indianapolis Colts, 27-24. Ironically enough, that came almost four years after another historic date for the franchise.

Monday marks the fourth-anniversary of Sean McDermott being hired as the team’s head coach. That occurred on Jan. 11, 2017:

Since then, things have turned out well.

McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane both signed long-term extensions this year. McDermott has a 38-26 overall record as Buffalo’s bench boss in those four seasons as well, which includes one lone losing season in 2018. That year saw the Bills start four different quarterbacks.

The Bills also might’ve gotten lucky with McDermott, too. According to a January 2019 report from ESPN, the Cleveland Browns actually wanted to hire McDermott. Instead they went with Hue Jackson because team owner Jimmy Haslam insisted upon hiring him instead.

In terms of McDermott’s own “class” for 2017 head coaching hires, there’s really either a… good tier or bad tier. In total, six new hires were made across the NFL that offseason.

Here’s all of them:

  • 49ers, Kyle Shanahan: 2019 NFC Champions

  • Rams, Sean McVay: 2018 NFC Champions

  • Chargers, Anthony Lynn: Fired last week

  • Jaguars, Doug Marrone: Fired last week

  • Broncos, Vance Joseph: Fired following 2019 season
