Players from 8 YAIAA schools earn spots in upcoming District 3 boys' tennis tournaments

Denny Garman has spent the last several years rebuilding the Hanover boys' tennis team.

Five years ago, the Nighthawks won just one division match and participation numbers were low. Over the last three seasons Garman has watched his roster grow into the high 20s with excellent results.

Two years ago, they shared the Division II title with Gettysburg and Susquehannock and last year they finished one game out of first. This year the Nighthawks went undefeated and claimed the title outright.

They did it without their projected No. 1 singles player and while mourning one of their teammates.

Garman knew it was going to be a difficult season after senior Dylan Arvizu Morales and his mother were killed by his father on Dec. 28. Morales was close with his teammates, and they used that as motivation throughout the season.

"As a team we talked about him every single day before we practiced or played a match," Garman said. "His nickname was Pretty Boy Flaco ... anytime we broke out of a huddle, that was our chant. The entire season was for him."

Garman said his team's effort was "incredible this year," even after prospective No. 1 singles player Yahir Corona tore his ACL two weeks before the season started and hasn't played.

That left Cullen Nakielny and Brian Corona to battle it out to play at No. 1, with Nakielny handling most of those duties.

Both players were among the top Class 2A seeds in the YAIAA singles tournament. Nakielny was the fifth seed, and Corona was the No. 7 seed.

Dallastown continued running through Division I opponents to finish with the title. The Wildcats' only loss came to District 3 foe Hempfield last week.

Defending champion Hayden Koons was the Class 3A top seed, and teammate Jacob Horn was the third seed.

Here are the results from the YAIAA singles and doubles tournaments:

Seedings hold in doubles

The seedings held through the first three places of the Class 3A doubles tournament and in the finals of the Class 2A tournament.

Dallastown's Hayden Koons and Jacob Horn held their top seeding to claim the Class 3A title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over second seeds Derek Baughman and Dominic Dion of Susquehannock. Central York's Kai MacLennan and Joshua Haupt earned the third District 3 spot with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over York Suburban's Jackson Miller and Caden Hall.

In Class 2A, top-seeded Parker Sanders and Tyler Chenault of Bermudian Springs defeated Littlestown's brother duo of Cyrus Marshall and Isaac Marshall, 6-1, 6-3. Brothers Nolan Chronister and Noah Chronister of Hanover claimed the third District 3 spot with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over West York's Ryan Steele and Kevin Vu.
