Picking the perfect first date outfit can be hard. You want to make a good first impression, but you don’t really know what the other person is looking for.
Men’s style expert Jovel Roystan shared his tips for a winning first date look that will hopefully get you a second one. Rapper Coi Leray joined Roystan to give a bit of the female perspective.
Leray said when she first sees her date she likes a nice clean shave.
“You see your clear skin with the fade and you look like you smell mad good,” she said. “Especially when y’all put on the Baby Oil, when the sun hit it — oooh.”
But her pet peeve was that she didn’t like to see a guy with his ankles out and no socks. Don’t worry, if you’ve bared your sock-less ankles to the world, Roystan has got plenty of solid advice for you.
1. Don’t try too hard
“First thing to keep in mind is don’t do the most,” Roystan said. “[Try] a nice jacket, a turtleneck, your favorite pair of jeans and some good boots.”
You can definitely have fun with your look, but it’s important not to go overboard or look like you’re trying too hard with too many logos and luxury items.
2. Just be yourself
“No matter who you’re going on a date with be yourself,” he said. “The point of a date is to get to know each other. Show her or him what you’re really all about, what your personal style is.”
He put together a burnt orange faux leather button-down from Zara with a Zara white mock neck t-shirt, some tapered trousers from ASOS and classic white Adidas Stan Smith sneakers.
3. Accessorize
“You can always win with accessories,” Roystan. “I talked to a few of my favorite ladies and they are definitely paying attention to your accessories, guys. They will see if you have a grown man wallet or a little boy wallet.”
A nice wallet or cardholder was one of the stylist’s must-have items. He paired his ensemble with a chic Fendi wallet and threw in a Riot Vitaly chain as a nod to his own personal style.
“I feel good, I feel proud. I think my date will be proud. So I’m good to go,” he said.
