Greg Roman to remain Ravens offensive coordinator in 2022
Greg Roman is expected to return in 2022 as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator, coach John Harbaugh said at Monday’s season-ending news conference.
“I planning on Greg being back. I believe Greg plans on being back,” Harbaugh said. “That’s the plan, and I’m excited about that. Offensively, we’ve done some pretty darn good things here over the past three years, offensively. I think we have a really good vision and understanding of what we want to build offensively — players we want to build around and what we need to do it.”
Roman’s future had come under scrutiny as the offense struggled toward the end of this season, when the Ravens’ play-calling and passing-game concepts were criticized. The Ravens finished the season with the NFL’s No. 17 offense, according to Football Outsiders’ efficiency metrics, down from No. 1 in 2019 and No. 11 in 2020.
Injuries were again a factor for the offense. Quarterback Lamar Jackson missed five games because of an ankle injury and illness. Left tackle Ronnie Stanley appeared in just one game before being sidelined by another season-ending ankle operation. Running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards missed the year with knee injuries. Rookie wide receiver Rashod Bateman and tight end Nick Boyle also missed substantial time with groin and knee injuries, respectively.
With Don “Wink” Martindale’s departure this month, Roman and special teams coordinator Chris Horton are now Harbaugh’s longest-tenured active coordinators. Both took over in 2019.
